Summary

It began with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. It continued with Days of Blood and Starlight. It ends with Dreams of Gods and Monsters.

Common enemy, common cause. When Jael's brutal seraph army trespasses into the human world, the unthinkable becomes essential, and Karou and Akiva must ally their enemy armies against the threat. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people. And, perhaps, for themselves.

But there are bigger threats than Jael in the offing. A vicious queen is hunting Akiva, and, in the skies of Eretz...something is happening. Massive stains are spreading like bruises from horizon to horizon; the great winged stormhunters are gathering as if summoned, ceaselessly circling, and a deep sense of wrong pervades the world. What power can bruise the sky?

From the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond, humans, chimaera, and seraphim will fight, strive, love, and die in an epic theatre that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy. At the very barriers of space and time, what do gods and monsters dream of? And does anything else matter?

Satisfying conclusion

It's actually quite a relief to find a trilogy that manages to stick to only 3 books and actually wrap up the story whilst leaving plenty of room for more visits to that world(s).

I'll try not to be spoilery but I was satisfied with the outcome. To be honest, I found the Akiva/Karou love story the least interesting bit. My favourite characters are definitely Mik and Zuze as they respond in the way I consider entirely appropriate to the discovery of other worlds and magic - largely by being sarcastic and never just accepting each new revelation as normal. There are some enjoyable discussions about the logic and limits of wishing that were great. I, for one, am happy that long descriptive battle scenes are avoided as they never work for me.

Kristin Hvam is excellent. I liked her Tiago and Razgut voices particuarly - I guess baddies are more fun. Some of the writing is quite lyrical and poetic which she manages very well. She can't really do a Belgian accent but that's expecting a bit too much specialisation from any reader.

Brilliant!

Would you listen to Dreams of Gods and Monsters again? Why?

Yes I would, because it is quite fascinating!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dreams of Gods and Monsters?

There are too many to mention really, but maybe, just maybe when Zuzanah went quiet! But seriously, the caves, the dreams, the host of characters all give me too many moments to chose from.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The battle over the bay, no, the moment when Razgut and Esther were sentenced to eternity together, no wait, burning the hand print into chest of Jael, no I really have it this time . . . "I don't believe we've been properly introduced".

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Breaking the timeless concepts of good and evil to love your very own angel, or is it your very own monster!

Any additional comments?

Magic and treachery with twists from mythology and history, this story provides fun, horrors and romance in equal measures. I am so sorry I've come to the end ... where next!

Lived up to expectations and more!

Firstly, me tell you what makes this book awesome: the brilliance of the author and the manificence of the narrator who is able to bring to life the multitude of characters, emotions, and physical settings (the different worlds) - this brilliant combination is what makes this book and all the other books in this series a 5-star listen!! Not one of the books in this series lets you down - they all live up to the hype, build on the story so well until its final conclusion. Even though you know there is a sequel, and the potential for more to the story, each book leaves you with a satisfying end.

Laini Taylor has somewhat developed her own unique style in delivering a sci-fi story. She describes the other (alien) world so well, her descriptive imagination reals draws you in, inserts you into the worlds and places she takes you, including here on earth. Laini allows you to get to know each character intimately, and there are many key characters, enabling you to appreciate each character's role in the whole scheme of things. You will develop a fondness for some, love some and even love to hate others, and develop several favorites from the heroine and hero, to their close counterparts and their enemies. Hence I am now using this book and series to help my kids develop their writing skills (develop imagination, descriptive writing, etc.) - the only problem is, and this applies to even those who can't read to save their life, my kids don't want to stop listening to this audiobook!!

I found this book and all books in this series mesmerising, captivating, intellectually stimulating, very funny in some parts, romantic and very emotional in other parts. Laini, with the help of such an awesome narrator, make the experience of the worlds, the story, the book, appear very, very real - this book and series allows you to truly escape from the here and now and never want to return!!

Brilliant conclusion to the series!!

Wonderful

I sat up late into the night to listen to the end of the last book with a great sense of satisfaction. Wonderful books - funny, heartbreaking, fantastical, human, and beautiful. Wonderful narration - one of the best readers I’ve heard.

Going to invest in the author’s back catalogue at once.

magical entrancing writing at its best.

it felt i was captured and entranced into minute by minute recall of the telling of our universe and the history of the ancients... I was caught up totally in this magical incredibly epic written journey and the narrator a perfect choice for telling this what felt like our cosmic story. The kind of book I want to digest for a while before attempting to find another and to not compare because there's a potential for next book to disappoint.. I take my hat of to being able to write so well. I have problems just trying to write this sentence😵 Bless all good writers your gift is immense.💜✨

Like an epic dream

This book was like an epic dream I didn't want to wake from, I'll never look at a red 'bruised' sky in the same way again...

Satisfying conclusion to this brilliant trilogy!

If you could sum up Dreams of Gods and Monsters in three words, what would they be?

Fight the good fight

What other book might you compare Dreams of Gods and Monsters to, and why?

All the great love and adventure stories.

Which character – as performed by Kristin Hvam – was your favourite?

Karou

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When you realise that the two main characters can finally be together

Any additional comments?

This whole series is completely mind blowing - and it has a significant twist. The heroes are totally unlikely and the opposite of what you expect.
