About this listen

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price - and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone.

A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can't walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction - if they don't kill each other first.

annoying

I wish I'd known this was not a stand alone book.
what happened to books that weren't part of a series?

Good book

Enjoyed most of it however really struggled with the Jesper narration, painfully slow reading at times.

Enjoyable

A very enjoyable listen. Just the right balance of pace and mystery. Mixed in with some great character development to boot. Loved the casting as well.

slow to start but good when going.

Well told with nice detail, however it is slow to start. I prefer books where you are thrown into the action and you have to figure out things as you go on.

I was hesitant - now I'm a believer.

I'm going to let you in on a secret. I came by this book because of one of the narrators: Elisabeth Evans. She had brilliantly narrated a series of books I read called Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas and sometimes when you stumble across a great narrator, you want to listen some more. When I saw this book listed and read the synopsis, I thought I would give it a go.

I am so glad I did. From the start Leigh Bardugo drags you into a scene that has you holding your breath to see whats going to happen, setting the tone for what becomes a roller coaster of a book. Kaz is a great leader however misguided (and sometimes a little selfish). Inej (probably the female favourite) brilliant although there is little mention of what working in menagerie did to her. Nina (who is my favourite) fierce and fantastic however drags the final reveal with Mattias out a little. Mattias (the unwilling guide) was a character arc done brilliantly - torn between the gang of misfits with loyalty and respect and a position with the army who preached both of those things but only wanted blind obedience. The two other male characters in the crew (Jesper and Weyland) became a little interchangeable. There seemed to be a glimmer of individuality and almost chemistry towards the end. I think a lot more could have been done with both and possibly this is what will be explored in the next installment.

This was also my first experience of difference narrators for different characters and although it took some getting used to, by the end I felt it had added to the story.

All in all, a great read.

Best book I’ve heard in a while

It’s been a while since I’ve read/ listens anything for pleasure as I find reading rather hard. But I started to listen to audible and saw the ads for it online, I subscribed and got recommended this book. It has been the most enjoyable experience I’ve had for I while. I couldn’t put it down. It is excellently written and the voice overs are amazing. I recommend this book to my friends all the time. I honestly believe this is my all time favourite book that I’d happily listen/read again and again.

Loved the adventure and intrigue, the characters, plot and ending, great set up for the next book. The narrators were spot on, I enjoyed their performances. I'll definitely buy the next installment.
