First book in a great series.

John Jakes is a master storyteller and with this first book in the Kent family saga we begin a journey with them through American history up until the 1890s. Enjoyable start. And it's always nice to be read to.

The start of an epic series

I have listened to all 8 books in this series. It's a magnificent sweep of American history bought to life through the inclusion of fictitious characters followed through several generations spanning three centuries of tumultuous events and changes in society. The narrator does a splendid job. My only criticism is the authors obsession with describing women's breasts! Virtually every female character gets hers appraised very often lasciviously. I found this irritating and risible: it detracts from the power of the narrative, which is otherwise riveting.
