About this listen
The sixth stunning thriller in the Kate Brannigan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.
Manchester PI Kate Brannigan finds herself with no choice but to take the only case on offer: bodyguarding a paranoid soap star.
But the glitzy world of showbusiness has a darker side. And as Kate scratches the surface, she uncovers dramas, threats and bitter rivalries. And when a self-styled ‘Seer to the Stars’ is murdered, Kate is left with more questions than answers.

"The real mistress of psychological gripping thrillers." (Daily Express)
"McDermid’s expertly juggled plotlines and masterful handling of pace and tension tick all the best boxes." (Guardian)
Sadly, the last book in this wonderful series

Brilliant all round

The story is extremely lame and the characters all lurch further down the road to laughable stereotyping. I come from Manchester but have never heard anyone continually referring to others as “chuck” as the soap star who hires Kate does. Cringe.
The story concerns the murder of a astrologist and each chapter infuriatingly commences with the reading of a horoscope. Boring at best but annoying if you want to re-listen to a chapter.
Richard continues to act like a moron. He probably has mono sodium glutamate poisoning due to his heavy consumption of Chinese (the cuisine not ,apparently, the people but I may be mistaken here)
Alexis becomes an even more stereotypical scouser speaking in stereotypical scousims.
Kate’s analogies and comparisons become increasingly cringeworthy and are often unnecessary. I suppose this is meant to tip the had toward American fictional detectives but mostly doesn’t work well.
Undemanding codswallop
