About this listen

The sixth stunning thriller in the Kate Brannigan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.

Manchester PI Kate Brannigan finds herself with no choice but to take the only case on offer: bodyguarding a paranoid soap star.

But the glitzy world of showbusiness has a darker side. And as Kate scratches the surface, she uncovers dramas, threats and bitter rivalries. And when a self-styled ‘Seer to the Stars’ is murdered, Kate is left with more questions than answers.

I have enjoyed this series more than I have enjoyed any other set of books. The characters are interesting and believable and the storyline is imaginative and only slightly far-fetched that no more books written after 1998 is very sad. I can only recommend these books will entertain you and leave you wishing for more.

Sadly, the last book in this wonderful series

I have read the whole series to date and love the character of Kte and her wheeling and dealing with the facts. mGreat personality and Choe Massey reads it amazing well. Hope the series continues. Love it.

Brilliant all round

This is definitely the worst so far of the Kate Brannigan series.
The story is extremely lame and the characters all lurch further down the road to laughable stereotyping. I come from Manchester but have never heard anyone continually referring to others as “chuck” as the soap star who hires Kate does. Cringe.
The story concerns the murder of a astrologist and each chapter infuriatingly commences with the reading of a horoscope. Boring at best but annoying if you want to re-listen to a chapter.
Richard continues to act like a moron. He probably has mono sodium glutamate poisoning due to his heavy consumption of Chinese (the cuisine not ,apparently, the people but I may be mistaken here)
Alexis becomes an even more stereotypical scouser speaking in stereotypical scousims.
Kate’s analogies and comparisons become increasingly cringeworthy and are often unnecessary. I suppose this is meant to tip the had toward American fictional detectives but mostly doesn’t work well.

Undemanding codswallop

I started this twice and gave up because I wasn't concentrating and couldn't work out why I wasn't enjoying a Val McDermid book. Two months later I rewound and tried again. This time I did enjoy it especially the way it had a few storyline in one book. Definitely different to the usual who dunnit.

Not what I expected

Well what a disappointing ending. And who the hell let’s a druggy mind their baby overnight?

But if a non-story.

Kate Brannigan's sense of humour has me laughing out loud over and over! This is the sixth in the Kate Brannigan series I've listened to...10/10 to Chloe Massey for her reading / interpretion ~ Val McDermid must be well-pleased. Ace.

This great murder mystery is the most enjoyable, and humorous, that I’ve listened to on audiobooks by Val McDermid. Chloe Massey managed to capture the spirit of the story and kept the narrative fluid all the way through. Every character was interesting and it was fun,in the early chapters trying to figure out the motive and the perpetrator. Meanwhile, Val McDermid kept you hooked by the different characters involved. The wonderful epilogue was the icing on the cake! I thoroughly recommend this book; a brilliant combination of prose and acting.

Fantastic!

Branigan at it again . This time covered in Snow and Ice, winter must be coming! Well narrated as usual, with the normal multi-thread story line to keep you on your toes. Her last KB book was a bit of a disappointment but this, although not classic was much better.

Kate wing Kate......

I would say, not as good as the first books. But still a fantastic listen. I just crave more.

The series is so well-written I'm really sorry there aren't any more. Dare I say I prefer this to the Stephanie Plum series? Chloe Massey's narration rivals Kobna Holdbrook-Smith of Rivers of London. Sad now 😢
