About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before
The audiobook of Small Gods is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor and director Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings; Planet of the Apes). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.
'You should do things because they're right. Not because gods say so. They might say something different another time.'
Religion is a competitive business in the Discworld. Everyone has their own opinion and their own gods, of every shape and size - all fighting for faith, followers, and a place at the top.
So when the great god Om accidentally manifests himself as a lowly tortoise, stripped of all divine power, it's clear he's become less important than he realised.
In such instances, you need an acolyte, and fast. Enter Brutha, the Chosen One - or at least the only One available. He wants peace, justice and love - but that's hard to achieve in a world where religion means power, and corruption reigns supreme...
'An intriguing satire on institutionalized religion corrupted by power . . .' Independent
'Deftly weaves themes of forgiveness, belief and spiritual regeneration' The Times
You can listen to the Discworld novels in any order, but Small Gods is a standalone.
The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

Brilliant telling of a wonderful book
Andy Serkis does a great job of bringing this tale to life - although a Liverpudlian God in the body of a turtle took me a little by surprise- and has given many happy hours listening. Excellent story by the master himself - Sir Terry Pratchett - and this version does not disappoint

Brilliant
Not so much an audiobook as a one -man radio play.
Andy Serkis was an inspired choice as narrator.
The best Discworld audiobook by far.

Better than the previous recording.
Okay so the previous recording of this book sounds like it was taken at the bottom of the sea while the narrator had a sock in his mouth, so saying this recording is better is definitely clearing a low bar.
The narrator is lively and mostly easy to listen to. He has clear voices for different characters. But this is a modern recording, just released. Why did nobody question the incredibly terrible American accent given to the ancient Ephebians? (Who are the Discworld equivalent of the ancient Greeks, so you've got an accent implied for you.) Who okayed that decision? And why did nobody point out how difficult it is to hear Vorbis? The narrator has gone well below his range and the result is not good.
On the whole it's a bit disappointing, given that this is a brand new recording.

Masterpiece (and a great introduction to Pratchett)
If you’ve ever wondered why so many people love Pratchett, this is a perfect starting point: even if it’s set in the Discworld universe, but it works as a stand-alone story (it’s set more than 100 years before most of the other books).
The audiobook is perfect rendition of a masterpiece: the voices of memorable are distinct but never a caricature, the plot is gripping, the jokes are hilarious, the ethos and the wisdom of Pratchett shine through every scene.

Absolutely excellent
This book had a very different feel to it than other DW books I've read. Although there were still humorous moments like you'd expect, there weren't as many. The book as a whole felt a lot more serious and, for all that I love TP's humour, I really enjoyed that about it. Like everyone has said, Andy Serkis' performance was stellar - I was excited when I saw he was the narrator and I wasn't disappointed in the least. All the DW narrators have done a good job, but this performance was excellent and I really hope there are more in the series

Great story, but some of the voices are just weird and wrong sounding.
I'm a massive pratchett fan but the narrator almost put me off one of his best books. some of the accents verge on criminal.

Stick with it
It took me a while to get into it, especially as I love the old Nigel Planer version, which spearheaded my foray into the fantastical world of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
I stuck with it and it didn’t take long for me to get onboard with Serkis’ growlingly different characters. Nicely done 👍🏽
