About this listen

"Twoflower was a tourist, the first ever seen on the Discworld. Tourist, Rincewind decided, meant idiot."

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but that looks completely different. It plays by different rules. Certainly it refuses to succumb to the quaint notion that universes are ruled by pure logic and the harmony of numbers. But just because the Disc is different doesn't mean that some things don't stay the same. Its very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the arrival of the first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land. But if the person charged with maintaining that survival in the face of robbers, mercenaries, and, well, Death, is a spectacularly inept wizard, a little logic might turn out to be a very good idea.

The Colour of Magic is the first novel in Terry Pratchett's acclaimed Discworld series, of which some 20 million copies have been sold.

Tony Robinson is Death... in a good way.

Tony Robinson is the best choice for narration for all the Terry Pratchett books. His Death is the best (maybe apart from Ian Richardson). I know that they are abridged, but I think they are done well.

Great book

Absolutely fantastic book and one I've been trying to read for years. I once read all the way to the last few pages and left the book on holiday.

Anyway, I finally managed to have time to listen to an audio book while driving to work and this was amazing. Not only is the story great but Tony Robinson provided a great voice for the parts, the only thing I struggled with was actually hearing any of the females when they spoke. Tony Robinson done a very soft spoken voice for each of them, and despite having the car volume very high, I still struggled to hear them. If I hadn't read the book before, I would have missed a lot.

Way too abridged - but still a good listen

Now I know it must be a COMPLETE nightmare abridging Terry Pratchet, but I still think that essentially halving the content was a bit harsh. I only bought this because all of the reviews from the unabridged version complain about the poor audio quality. I think that it's time for a new version personally.

If you've read the book, you will find huge chunks missing. If not, you probably won't notice that much as the "plot bits" are still left in. My two boys (aged 7 and 9) really enjoyed it and its a good introduction to the Diskworld. I would highly recommend buying the unabridged version of Book 2 (The Light Fantastic) to follow on with however. It will make much more sense.

Simply Brilliant

Vocally animated more by Tony than you could probably do yourself in your own head! Written by a legend and voiced by one.. perfect harmonious storytelling of the first Discworld Novel.

Persevere - you won't be disappointed

It took me 3 goes (once trying to read the book itself) before I 'got it'. There is a mindset that accompanies appreciation of Mr Pratchett's sense of humour and incredible imagination. Now I have that mindset, I'm hooked!!

Excellent Book

Would you listen to The Colour of Magic again? Why?

I might listen to it again, but it'll be the unabridged version, which is a shame.

Which character – as performed by Tony Robinson – was your favourite?

It has to be Rincewind really, his generally pessimistic outlook on life was fantastically juxtaposed with Twoflower and his eternal optimism.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"In a world, on a disc, on 4 elephants, on a turtle, trouble is a-brewing"

Any additional comments?

I love this book and Tony Robinson really brought the characters to life. At the time when I was deciding which version to download I didn't notice that this was the unabridged version, which is a shame for 2 reasons: 1) I would have liked to have heard the full story. 2) The next books I've downloaded in the series are not narrated by Tony Robinson.

If only this narrator did the unabridged

Easy and happy listening, author has a unique sense of humour which ensures your attention. Strange at first but then you can't put it down

Masterfull performance

What made the experience of listening to The Colour of Magic the most enjoyable?

It`s the way in which Tony Robinson tells the story.

What does Tony Robinson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Tony Robinson brings to life the various characters with a veritiy of voices and a light style of narration.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Did make me laugh in places.

Any additional comments?

It`s just a shame that it`s an abrigded version could have listened all day.

You should really try reading this author!

I was in my teens when a friend of mine gave me a book that was written by Terry Pratchett. It was translated version of the 4th book of this series and to this day it's in my top 10 of books to recommend to anybody. The way He writes never seems to never get old and the stories WILL take you to a different world, no matter how young or old you are.

This is the first book of one of the best fantasy book series there is in this world.

If you are not a native English speaker you may find it a little bit hard to read and I would recommend trying it at your language first if possible. The translated books were almost as good as the originals at least in my language (Finnish). But please do try at least one of his books. They are all masterpieces. If you can't read this one (because you can't find it in your own language or ..) Try one of these: Mort,  Night Watch or The Long Utopia (by  Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter)

Please try his works! You will not regret it!
