About this listen
You could say it all started with the red-eyed tramp with the slimy fingers who put the wind up Neville, the part-time barman, something rotten. Or when Archroy's wife swapped his trusty Morris Minor for five magic beans while he was out at the rubber factory.
On the other hand, you could say it all started a lot earlier. Like 450 years ago, when Borgias walked the earth.
Pooley and Ornally, stars of the Brentford Labour Exchange and the Flying Swan, want nothing to do with it, especially if there's a Yankee and a pint of Large in the offing. Pope Alexander VI, last of the Borgias, has other ideas.

Part 1 of the Brentford Trilogy
What a load of old toot! Still, there’s many a slip between pint of Large and lip.

Enjoyable
I think I quite enjoyed this book. Never read (heard) any previous Robert Rankin before. It was brilliantly acted and loved his use of words. Was it a weird ending? Had to listen twice to understand it. More of an anticlimax than antipope!

weird ending but great story
I really liked it, quirky, slowly building, introducing characters within a good timeline, not a lot to moan about really.
What one next?

Happy to have this in my library
I have read a lot of Rankin over the years and really enjoy his work. Once I got into the swing of the narration and characters, found this very enjoyable. having Rankin narrate it himself I found quite a joy and found his inflection very similar to the way it sounded in my head when I read it years ago. all in all, a great way to revisit his wonderful way with words, (alliteration very much intended)

Baked Beans
If you could sum up The Antipope in three words, what would they be?
Irreverent, tasteless, beery.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Who could choose between Jim and John?? Though Soap Distant was fun...
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Authors should not be allowed to read their works. That's why they are authors, not actors. Apart from that, wonderful stuff all round! All the joys of a good book plus I can knit
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would like to have listened to it all at once but ah!! Life carries on regardless
Any additional comments?
Are those beans?? Hmm...... beans.......

Robert Rankin's first book performed by cast
Narrated by the great man and all characters voiced by actors and backed with studio sound fx. I've done a few of his later yarns and love his work and his narration, and this was an enjoyable romp with the added dimension of a cast to back him. Comes together beautifully at the end. You can't go wrong with the man. Not as laugh out loud funny as his more modern works but is pleasantly amusing (like good omens -Pratchett/Gaiman) with a handful of moments that made me roar. Dangerous when in public!

Fun far fetched fiction!
I enjoyed the performance from the readers but found the extras like sound effects, music, and groans a bit overwhelming sometimes. I guess that's part of the madness of this lovely book but I wish it was toned down a little from where it is.
The story is solid and enjoyable. I had to listen to the end to hear how it ended. The pacing was also good. It's a good book and well worth your time.

As usual
Superb. Roberts narration with the added voice actors, really added to a fantastic story. 5 stars

For the love of God, no more backing music
No audiobook needs to have a backing soundtrack. Enjoyed the story, the acting, but the backing music is just distracting.
