Summary

Detective Inspector Geraldine Steel relocates to London to take on another harrowing murder investigation. The bodies of two black girls are discovered in quick succession in North London; two teeth from each victim extracted after death. One of the girls worked in a massage parlour and suspicion falls on a client of hers, a known racist, but while the police flounder, the killer takes another girl home to his attic, where he keeps his victims chained up while he shows them his 'collection'.

With the death toll mounting, DI Geraldine Steel is running out of time as she hunts for the elusive killer the papers are calling 'The Dentist'.

Like watching league 1 football when you’re used to the Premier League...

I really want to like these books, but I honestly couldn’t wait to finish it... The ‘diversity and inclusion policy’ made my toes curl, as did the related conversations between the hackneyed, cliched characters. The language is also unnecessarily florid in places, which I also remember from the first book in the series - In this one it was things like using the word ‘garments’ when ‘clothes’ would have served perfectly. It’s very minor, but it just adds to a sense of someone trying too hard to be a great writer. Particularly in this book I felt impatient with most of the characters - I wanted to grab them all by the shoulders and urge them to stop being idiots! I think I’m done with Geraldine Steel.
The narration is eloquent, and whilst accents are attempted many of them were pretty poor and/or cringeworthy. The presentation of people in distress is whiny and irritating. Oh man, I really didn’t enjoy this much at all... It’s like how watching a league one football game makes you appreciate the skill of Premier League players - They make it look effortless and elegant, but their skill is thrown into sharp relief only when compared to the efforts of lower league counterparts. This lacks the real skill and elegance of other writers, and just feels a bit corny and amateur.
