Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Survivor's Club novels comes "an epic love story" (Publishers Weekly) of intrigue and deception and the promises that can break a heart...

"I will love you all my life and even beyond that." Even at 15, Jeanne, the privileged daughter of a royalist EmigrE, knew what she liked: Englishman Robert Blake, bastard son of a marquess. Yet his questionable birth rendered him forbidden. Forced to part, they were still young enough to believe in tomorrow. But as time passed, that brief ephemeral flirtation at Haddington Hall faded into memory.

Eleven years later in Portugal, during the Peninsular Wars, they meet again, both of them spies, and destined to be working on opposing sides. He is now a captain with the British army. She is the widowed Marquesa das Minas - sometimes going by the name Joana da Fonte. However for only one of them does the flicker of recognition still burn. Amid the fury of war and in the shadow of secrets, passion flares once again. But for Joana and Robert, each entrusted to a dangerous mission that demands deception, falling in love could be the most dangerous risk of all.

History and Romance

Very different to the usual Mary Balogh books. Her older books are more passionate, less gentle but have more depth, especially with the historical aspect.
Joana was a wonderful if slightly frustrating character. I thoroughly enjoyed this romance, read wonderfully as usual by Rosalind Landor.

Interesting story

The story started well with interesting characters however it went one for around 10 chapters to long. Towards the end it became repetitive and seemed as though Mary balough was padding it out with more of the same. The narrator was once again great

Superlatives fail me

I have read every one of MB’s books and I rate this novel one of her best. The plot never fails to
Intrigue and the two such desperate protagonists are character driven and three, no four, dimensional! I cannot agree with the previous reviewer that it is repetitive. I was sorry this novel ended and how magnificent was the twist at the end. I couldn’t see it coming but Mary Balogh managed it logically and to this reader’s ultimate satisfaction. Genius.

Stupidity abounds

The heroine is the architect of her own disasters and disappointments. The sex is plentiful but not specific. It is too often used to manipulate, punish and control Rosalind Landor does a really good job.
