About this listen

From New York Times best-selling legend Mary Balogh - the beloved author of Longing, Silent Melody, and Beyond the Sunrise - comes a ravishing novel of passion and duty, love, and menace....

Life has taught Lucas Kendrick, duke of Harndon, that a heart is a decided liability. Betrayed by his elder brother, rejected by his fiancée, banished by his father, and shunned by his mother, Luke fled to Paris, where he became the most sought-after bachelor in fashionable society. Ten years later fate has brought him back home to England as head of the family who rejected him. Unwilling as he is to be involved with them, he must assume responsibility for his younger siblings, the family estate he once loved - and the succession. He faces the prospect of marrying with the greatest reluctance - until he sees beguiling Lady Anna Marlowe across a ballroom one night.

Anna, far from being the bright-eyed innocent Luke takes her for, is no more a stranger to the shadows of a painful past than he is. But for her, marriage cannot so easily solve what is wrong in her life - not when a tormentor stalks her to the very doors of Bowden Abbey, where Luke and Anna must learn to trust in each other or risk any chance they may have for a happy future.

A Thrilling Tale

A story full of twists, turns, mystery, intrigue and of course love. Quite simply wonderful. What a marvellous writer . This is the 7th book I’ve listened to by Mrs Ballogh and they’ve all been excellent and beautifully narrated. Highly recommended!

The end waa so abrupt

The book is soo long I began to despair. I kept listening though as I wanted to understand
Then it ends so suddenly. Left with so many questions.

Good plot with twist

This is my second book by the author and I have enjoyed both. Found the narrator’s male voices odd for the most part, but you get used to it. Will maybe try another by Mary Balogh

Very much a mystery/thriller

First time to listen to one of her books, it was very complicated and there was a mystery and thriller element. Couldn't stop listening until I had gotten to the reveal near the end. A little bit of a stressful listening to be honest haha but with some nice endearing moments. The narrator was good at introducing tension into the narrative however not much vocal differentiation between the characters.

Love with a twist

Narration was good, story line was slow and predictable, even so I Really enjoyed the performance and the story itself lots of twists and turns but unfortunately didn't jeep you guessing.

too horrible a back drop to the story, not conductive to relaxing

the malevolent / nasty character spoilt a good story as he was too intimidating and ruined what was otherwise a good story.

good narration and story

disliked repetition, as if publisher said "200 more pages, even if it means repeating over and over what they are feeling, did feel and will feel"

Too much angst for me

Fabulous narrator & lovely Georgian period details. Anna is lovely & her vitality cancels some of the angst. The Duke is complex but a never the less a great character. However, far too much angst which was quite depressing at times.
All ends well but not before my nerves were frazzled.

Great plot

Mary Balogh tends to moralise a bit but has shown restraint in this story. This is a story for adults spoilt a bit by references to Cinderella, 'soul' and talking to graves. Rosalyn Landor does well as usual.
