About this listen

Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets...and secrets hide in every shadow

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school - and her reputation - behind to follow her mother's trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected - he's a street lord and con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems. Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos and illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless Mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city...and she'll need to play.

Good idea but not sure if it was executed well

I did enjoy the story but many of the concepts were hard to follow. Great performance and likeable characters

Book of the Month

in February I read/listened to 12 books and this was my favourite. It's a ride and a really fun one at that!

A book about dangerous gangs and gambling, with a bi young man of colour as the protagonist; and a posh girl from a finishing school in search of her mother; leading to an adventure in the city of sin.

The narrator is excellent, with great pace and creating good tones and atmosphere for this story. I've read reviews of people struggling to buy the characters when reading the book but listening to the narrator bringing the characters to life made me really care about them overtime.

I'd recommend it for people who generally like YA Fantasy. Also this book is more similar to Caraval with the magical game atmosphere than Six of Crows. Don't read the reviews that compare this book to SoC, they're nothing alike.

Listening to the sequal now.

Captivating and engaging

It took me a few chapters to get into this, but then I was captivated. The author is descriptive which supports the reader and the character development of a lot of the characters was ecellent.

Amazing story & wonderful narrator!

I listened to this mainly because I didn’t need to pay a credit for it, however I FELL IN LOVE! This book is amazing! The story is unique and gripping, the person reading this out is doing a fantastic jobs giving each character their own voice & accents… absolutely lovely book! I already downloaded the 2nd and 3rd and can’t wait how the story ends!

Different than usual

Amazing story! Very different than usual fantasy. Creative and captivating. The characters are complex, the diversity is increasingly welcomed!

Enjoyable Listen

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It was fast paced, the characters were interesting and the plot was cohesive and kept me intrigued until the end.

I did feel it was using coincidence a bit too much at times throughout the book, like when Enne happened to come across the character who would lead her to Levi. Overall though, this book is a fun listen, I'd recommend it.

really wasnt a fan of the characters much but i did enjoy the worldbuilding even if it was sort of thin. the plot was just okay didn't dislike or like it much. it's pretty much just your typical YA sort of story

almost dnf it but i pushed till the end because im not a quitter! good for just putting on in the background as its an easy listen
