"A Confession" is an 1880 autobiographical essay on the subject of despair, philosophy, and religion by the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. In it, he describes his search for answers to questions on the meaning of life. Tolstoy discusses his various attempts to find answers in science, philosophy, Eastern wisdom, and the opinions of his fellow novelists. Recognizing the deep religious convictions of ordinary people as a source of answers, he challenges the authenticity of organized religion.

The memoirs of Lieutenant-General James Longstreet contains much of historical interest. He provides a personal account of the progress of the Civil War, plus a wealth of anecdotes about Robert E Lee and his officers. Scott Palmer from an 18th-century translation of Boehme’s complete works.

The City of God is the usual English translation of the most influential work written in the fifth century. Augustine, bishop of Hippo, wrote it between 413 and 426. Augustine argued that Christianity was not the cause of the empire’s collapse. He turned the gaze from the city of Rome to the City of God, in the spiritual life of true believers.

Warpath and Bivouac, or the Conquest of the Sioux offers a picture of campaigning in the 1870s and records the sights and sounds of plains warfare. This campaign was the one in which General Custer suffered his famous defeat at the Little Big Horn. It tells the story of the nobleman Dmitry Olenin who joins the army in the hope of escaping the boredom and superficiality of daily life. He longs to find fulfilment among the people of the Caucasus. While spending life as a Cossack, he learns lessons about the nature of reality, moral philosophy, the complexities of psychology, and his own inner life.

Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785) remains one of the most influential works on moral philosophy. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant sets out by explaining the core concepts and principles of moral theory and demonstrating that they are normative for rational agents. He argues that the world of understanding is more fundamental than the world of sense. Therefore the moral law, which clearly applies to the world of understanding, also applies to the world of sense because the world of understanding is primary.

American Indian Fairytales is a collection of Native American folklore retold for children and young adults. Margaret Compton (1852-1903) drew on authentic lore from a wide selection of regions. The tales include "The Story-Teller Himself", "Snowbird and the Water-Tiger", "The Coyote or Prairie Wolf", and "How Mad Buffalo Fought the Thunder-Bird".

George Thenault’s The Story of the Lafayette Escadrille was published in 1921. These pilots were fighting at the beginning of military aviation. Thenault’s account covers all aspects of this squadron in World War One, from their activities on the ground to battles in the air.

Anna Karenina is a complex novel in eight parts with more than a dozen major characters. The narrative deals with themes of betrayal, faith, family, marriage, and Russian society against a backdrop of rapid transformation due to the liberal reforms of Emperor Alexander II. The plot revolves around an extramarital affair between Anna and the cavalry officer Count Alexei Vronsky that scandalizes Saint Petersburg society and compels the young lovers to flee to Italy in search of an elusive happiness.
