Holmes und Watson besuchen Dr. Victor Adler in seiner Praxis in der Berggasse. Er gilt der Wiener Polizei als verdächtig, da er als prominentester Führer der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie schon öfter wegen aufrührerischen Aktivitäten verhaftet wurde.

In der Wiener Polizeidirektion werden Holmes und Watson von Zentralinspektor Rudolf von Götz empfangen. Als erstes nehmen sie den Tatort, die kaiserliche Schatzkammer, in Augenschein. Holmes entwickelt eine erste Theorie zu dem Diebstahl.

Holmes und Watson müssen eine Nacht in Feldkirch verbringen, ehe sie weiter nach Osten reisen können. Mit der kaiserlich-königlichen Reichsbahn geht es über Innsbruck, Salzburg und Linz nach Wien, wo sie am Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahnhof ankommen.

Watson wacht mit Erinnerungslücken an einem ihm unbekannten Ort auf. Bald kommt er zur Vermutung, dass er in der vergangenen Nacht entführt und eingesperrt wurde. Er schmiedet einen Fluchtplan, der jedoch überaus gefährlich ist.

An der Hotelrezeption sind zwei Briefe für Holmes eingelangt. Das eine Schreiben ist von seinem Bruder Mycroft, der sich um die britischen Interessen sowie die internationale Diplomatie sorgt. Die andere Zuschrift enthält eine überraschende Drohung.
