In the Eye of the Wild begins with an account of the French anthropologist Nastassja Martin's near fatal run-in with a Kamchatka bear in the mountains of Siberia. Martin's professional interest is animism; she addresses philosophical questions about the relation of humankind to nature, and in her work she seeks to partake as fully as she can in the lives of the indigenous peoples she studies. Her violent encounter with the bear, however, brings her face-to-face with something entirely beyond her ken—the untamed, the nonhuman, the animal, the wild.

Após ser atacada por um urso ao pé de um vulcão na Sibéria, região onde realizava pesquisas sobre o povo even, Nastassja Martin luta por sua sobrevivência, enquanto passa por internações em hospitais da Rússia e da França. Neste livro, misto de relato etnográfico e autobiografia, a antropóloga francesa reflete sobre esse acontecimento, no qual, segundo ela própria, "um urso e uma mulher se encontram e as fronteiras entre os mundos implodem".

Eine ihrer Forschungsreisen führt sie auf die vulkanreiche russische Halbinsel Kamtschatka, wo sie die Bräuche der Ewenen studiert und dabei tief in deren Kultur eintaucht. Auf einer Bergtour begegnet sie einem Bären: Es kommt zum Kampf, den beide schwer verletzt überleben. Den Animismus, den Nastassja Martin als Wissenschaftlerin beschrieben hat, erfährt sie nun am eigenen Leib: Die Grenzen zwischen ihr selbst und dem Bären verschwimmen.
