For Alice and her partner Joe, moving to the sleepy Cotswold village of Penton is a chance to embrace country life and prepare for the birth of their unexpected first child. He can take up woodwork; maybe she'll learn to make jam. But the rural idyll they'd hoped for doesn't quite pan out when a dead body is discovered at their local antenatal class and they find themselves suspects in a murder investigation.

Alice has made the most of her maternity leave, becoming simultaneously a proud mum (well, a mum, at least) and accidental amateur sleuth. With her son, Jack, fast approaching his first birthday, she is keen to continue to keep him alive and maybe finally catch up on some sleep...if she's lucky. When an opportunity presents itself in the unexpected form of a sit-in protest, Alice and her friends willingly chain themselves to trees and settle in for some overdue rest. But the next morning one of their fellow protestors is found strangled.

Da Alice og hendes mand flytter fra storbyens stress og jag i London til Cotswolds, er det en mulighed for at komme ned i gear og bygge rede inden fødslen af deres første barn. Men den landlige idyl krakelerer, da der i den tilsyneladende så fredelige landsby bliver begået et mord. Sammen med sine nye veninder fra fødselsforberedelsesholdet springer Alice ud som amatørdetektiv, og jagten på morderen går ind. Det bliver alt andet end en rolig barsel.
