Premier Africain agrégé de grammaire, poète célébré dans le monde entier, premier président du Sénégal, académicien : Senghor a eu tous les honneurs. Accusé d'essentialisme pour avoir inventé la Négritude, d'autoritarisme pour avoir fait emprisonner ses opposants, difficile aujourd'hui de faire un portrait nuancé de Senghor tout en rendant justice à la grande actualité de sa pensée poétique et philosophique. C'est pourtant cette ligne de crête qu'emprunte Elara Bertho, loin de l'hagiographie, loin des anathèmes.
