Ihr Stiefbruder wird schließlich für die Tat verurteilt, und kurz darauf verschwindet die ganze Familie spurlos. Im Frühling 2019 zieht die Ärztin Thea Lind im Schloss ein. Nachdem sie einen seltsamen Fund in einer uralten Eiche gemacht hat, steigt ihre Faszination für die Tragödie aus der Vergangenheit, die sich direkt neben ihrem neuen Zuhause zutrug.

1987 verbringen die beiden besten Freundinnen Laura und Iben die Winterferien wie jedes Jahr bei Lauras geliebter Tante Hedda in deren Feriendorf Gärdsnäset in Schonen in Süd-Schweden. Doch beim Luciafest geraten die Mädchen wegen eines Jungen in Streit, und am Ende des Abends brennt der Festsaal lichterloh. Laura wird schwer verletzt, Iben stirbt in den Flammen. 30 Jahre lang wird Laura nicht nach Gärdsnäset zurückkehren, ihre Tante wird sie nie wiedersehen. Als Laura nun die Nachricht erhält, dass Hedda gestorben ist und ihr Gärdsnäset vererbt hat, ist sie geschockt.

Sie haben die Schule beendet, heute Nacht wollen sie zum letzten Mal diesen Sommer baden und dann erwartet sie das richtige Leben. Ein tragischer Unfall, lautet das Ergebnis der polizeilichen Ermittlungen... aber viele in der kleinen Kommune Nedanås zweifeln daran.
