Summary

Chloe Pirrie and Ben Batt star in this stunning dramatisation of Emily Brontë's classic, adapted by best-selling author Rachel Joyce.

When homeless orphan Heathcliff is brought to the isolated, storm-swept farmhouse of Wuthering Heights, he sparks very different emotions in the children of the house, Hindley and Cathy. While Hindley instantly hates him and makes his life miserable, Heathcliff finds a soul mate in Cathy, and the two spend days playing together on the wild Yorkshire moors.

Inseparable as children, passionately in love as adolescents, they are everything to each other - until Cathy meets the wealthy, handsome Edgar Linton and agrees to marry him. Consumed by jealousy and resentment, Heathcliff flees, returning three years later rich and seeking revenge.

Bitter and cruel, he vows to destroy everyone who has hurt him - and his hatred and vengeance will ruin the lives of two generations before it runs its course....

First published in 1847, Wuthering Heights scandalised Victorian readers with its shocking portrayal of obsession and doomed love. This radio production, dramatised by Rachel Joyce, retains all the force and intensity of Emily Brontë’s masterpiece.

Captures the true spirit of the book. Stunning.

All the brutality and romance of the book brought to life by a perfect cast and a beautiful Gorecki score. One of the very best things I have ever listened to. Radio like this is worth going to war over.

Brilliant performances and well told story!

A brilliant performance and production, I could easily listen to it again. My only complaint would be the recap at the start of every chapter felt a bit unnecessary.

The best version, ever!

I originally heared this on BBC radio 4 this summer (2018).

What a wonderful play, in fact the best version you will ever hear. The actors are wonderful, the adaptation is fantastic and Henry Goretski's "Sorrowful songs" fits the story seamlessly. You will keep on going back to this no matter how many times you have finished it.

Enjoy the best play of Wuthering Heights EVER!

This…

Has got to be the most rounded and in many ways accurate dramatization out there. And this includes the movies too!

A Great Rendition of the Novel

I loved how imaculate the voice acting was. The musical score, the narration. It was truly amazing.

Wuthering Heights.

Intoxicating listen to one of the great classics, Bronte's tale is just as spellbinding today as it ever was.

Excellent

Wuthering Heights is often mistaken for a love story with Heathcliff as a brooding manly hero. The film and TV adaptations haven’t really helped dispel this image
In reality it is about jealousy, obsession, hatred, revenge, alienation and faithlessness
There is a gentle love story at the end but it’s there to rebalance the rest of this terrible and tragic story
This adaptation is excellent; it is faithful to the novel and the emotion of the parts are played without straying into the drama school histrionics that are sometimes found in the screen adaptations
If you have never read the novel this is a really good place to start. If you like it then get the novel and get yourself over to Haworth to see the Parsonage where the book was written and then walk up to Top Withins for the atmosphere of the Heights
