Summary
Three complete radio dramas featuring writer-cum-amateur detective Paul Temple, plus bonus archive material.
When it comes to classic crime partnerships, Paul Temple and his wife, Steve, are the crème de la crème. Between 1938 and 1968, their glamorous exploits enthralled generations of radio listeners around the world. Here, presented in chronological order, are some of the amateur detective's earliest adventures.
'Send for Paul Temple' (1940) is an early remake of the now lost original 1938 BBC production. 'Paul Temple Intervenes' (1942) finds Paul and Steve investigating a series of celebrity murders whilst 'Paul Temple and the Vandyke Affair' (the original 1950 production, presented here for the very first time) concerns the strange disappearance of the Desmond baby and her sitter.
Hugh Morton, Bernard Braden, Carl Bernard and Peter Coke play Paul in these episodes, with Bernadette Hodgson, Peggy Hassard and Marjorie Westbury as Steve. A bonus track features rare archive material from otherwise lost productions, including the final episodes of 'Send for Paul Temple' (1938) and 'Paul Temple and the Front Page Men' (1938).
Duration: 11 hours approx.

listen to chapter 10 first!
all the reviewers complaining about the sound quality should listen to chapter 10 which details how the original recordings were lost, found in poor condition and painstakingly restored. there is no way it could be restored to modern recording standards and I think it's much the better for that. a wonderful throwback to the past. my only complaint is that the episodes are a bit too exciting to fall asleep to.

Paul Temple: Volume One
Still as exciting as ever! Thank you for keeping my childhood alive and for keeping my bedtime routine filled with car crashes, bombs and villains. Still completely in love with Paul and Steve the stories wouldn’t be the same without them. I’m always going to call for Paul Temple

Bad recording
The last story was incomplete.
The first chapter of it was a repeat of part of a previous story.
Most upsetting.

Dated, Nostalgic and Fun
Yes they’re old.
Yes the sound quality is variable.
Yes the acting is a bit naff at times.
Yes there are random episodes at the end (presumably the only surviving recordings of some series)?
Yes it’s not Peter Coke.
Yes you could moan about loads of other bits and pieces.
But honestly why bother. It’s dated, nostalgic fun. Someone has worked hard to put it all together for Paul Temple fans. By Timothy accept it for what it is, and enjoy…

quite good
did not enjoy this book as much as previous books I've listened to. I find the remakes to be of better quality and more interesting dramatisation. otherwise just ok.

Very enjoyable for Paul Temple fans
I've always loved the Paul Temple stories, and was very intrigued to catch up with these earlier episodes. I had an initial sense of disappointment because I was unable at the time to mark a clip and the Fast Forward/Fast Rewind 30 secs facility appeared to be unavailable. In my review, I reported these issues. However, they must have been due to an unfortunate glitch because these anomalies have been rectified. I am, therefore, editing my original review to acknowledge this.
I have now listened to the first of the stories, along with the following "documentary" explaining how the recordings were discovered and modified to cover imperfections on the original recordings.
I am very happy to have been able to purchase this Volume, and have other Volumes in my Wish List for future purchase.

Outtakes make this volume
The added commentary on how the recordings were recovered and the interview with the original Paul Temple make this worth a listen
