About this listen

'From cold cases and serial killers to the death of a spy, Peter's true life story is as gripping as the finest thriller' - Peter James, author of Picture You Dead

Discover the truth beyond the police tape in What Lies Beneath, the arresting memoir of murder, investigation and justice from Peter Faulding, a world-leading forensic search expert.

Recovering bodies, finding discarded remains, identifying unmarked graves and saving people from locations and situations too dangerous for the normal emergency services - all in a day’s work for Peter Faulding.

From removing protestors from inside dangerous tunnels to the scenes of some of the UK’s most notorious crimes, he describes how he has developed into a highly regarded and highly skilled search specialist, whose job is to assist investigators and police as they search crime scenes and bring serial killers to justice.

Peter gives new details on some of the country’s most harrowing murder cases – including that of serial killer Peter Tobin, the Nicola Payne case and the Helen McCourt murder; sheds new light on mysterious deaths, including MI6 worker Gareth Williams; and details the incredible lengths he goes to when helping investigators.

Get ready to join Britain’s most extraordinary forensic search expert on his journey through deadly booby-trapped tunnel systems and into dark waters that hold horrific secrets, then onwards through uninviting crime scenes and into the minds of killers.

Interesting background to the formation of SGI.

Felt that the narrator gave a touch of something from an old ' Boys Own Paper' rendition to the story.

But you cannot detract from the sheer effort and dedication that has gone into the building up of SGI.The situations that Peter and his men have been placed in were amazing. They are innovative and courageous in my estimation.

Interesting but disappointing

I downloaded this book because I volunteer in the search and rescue space and was curious to listen to this because Peter Faulding promotes himself considerably within this area. What I got was interesting, but at times quite egotistical which was disappointing. I get that he is a self-made man with certain skills, but you are made aware of that fact over and over again. I found it interesting to hear about a lot of the situations he’s dealt with, but was surprised on how very few occasions he has actually has found someone? Considerably fewer than any regional voluntary search and rescue teams. That genuinely surprised me because of his profile.

He comes across as being a charming and self confident chap. And he clearly has a lot of expertise and a lot of tools in his kit bag. If a member of my family went missing, I would be pleased if he was involved, but I don’t think I would want to get my hopes up too much perhaps. He seems a very different personality type to the people I volunteer with.

Fascinating

I really enjoyed this book. I was hesitant initially because I'd seen lots of reviews saying it was too technical, however I didn't find that to be the case. It gives a great insight to a quite remarkable individual and the journey he went on that lead him to his unique and specialised area of work.

Fascinating

I first Peter’s story on a podcast. The book is excellent and though heartbreaking at times, the world needs people willing to do what the average person can’t

He does know it’s DEPOSITION, not DISPOSITION site, right?

I took this with a giant pinch of salt - he makes out that he single handedly saved the day on numerous occasions when in reality, he worked as a small part in a large professional team of qualified individuals who this telling of the stories, takes away from. Peter had been involved with many interesting events and lived an interesting life but the egotistical white male privilege that comes across throughout is galling, Portraying yourself as an expert is hard to believe when the word disposition is incorrectly used throughout. A shame because this is a potentially interesting memoir of an unusual life.

I downloaded this book after hearing a Podcast Interview with Stephen English. It’s very interesting, sad, brave and honest of a Thunderbird Hero. Keep up the great work sir. X

A life lived

From start to finish this book and the descriptions of what, where and how the situations occurred is a great listen. Some tough jobs to deal with mentally and physically but executing with professionalism and compassion. Your caring approach for what you do for people is commendable, thank you.
