About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
A profound and moving portrait of one doctor's life and work in the NHS....
We ask so much of our doctors.
To heal. To trust. To care. To listen.
To tell a man he might be dead tomorrow. To help a man who doesn't want to live.
To look into a parent's panicked eyes as their tiny daughter fights for every breath.
To watch a 103-year-old woman slip away from a life well-lived.
Doctors know our deepest secrets, our private worries and our most vulnerable moments. But they listen to all of us and under their gaze we are all equally worthy of help.
34 Patients is the breathtaking and uplifting memoir of a doctor who dares to look closer at a crowded waiting room and value each soul and story he encounters. Through stories of the patients he has helped and lost, and those who have changed him for ever, Dr Tom Templeton weaves a profound and moving portrait of humanity, asking us to treat all with compassion.

Enjoyable stories about many medical specialties
The book was clearly read and discussed many factors in healthcare like the conflict between the personal choice of patients and healthcare staff, risk factors that contribute to health conditions, and the known and often uncertain outcomes.
It discusses topics such as mental health problems, cancer, traumatic injuries, liver failure, and heart disease.

34 patients
This was a good insight into a life of a doctor. The end notes were an excellent way to end the book, signposting individual for further support.

A Bit Frustrating
I enjoyed this book, but like the other reviewer, I found the lack of an ending to the stories a bit frustrating. I don't like being left hanging without knowing what happened to the patients, even though I appreciate this is what happens in real life.
Good narration, the only criticism is that you can hear quite a lot of swallowing but a minor thing!

Enlightening
A sympathetic and informative first hand view of the experiences of a Doctor providing an insight into the issues and fate of his patients that unless exposed we rarely if ever contemplate. I enjoyed the diversity and well presented structure. The Final chapter on how to seek help and advice is invaluable. The statistics however are somewhat sobering. Highly recommended.

An easy narrator's voice and interesting stories
I enjoyed listening to the different medical conditions and how they affected the patient's lives and were viewed sympathetically by the narrator

Enjoyable
I liked this book and I found the stories really interesting but, I wish some of the chapters were longer. I found some stories fell short and I would have liked to learn more about the specific individuals illness. Other stories went on a tad to long. On the whole though the book was well written and well read.

Loved it
Really enjoyed listening to this book. Found the stories interesting with an appropriate amount of humour. Very well read which makes all the difference with an audio book.

Touching, relatable and revealing - Excellent
An amazing and bold Doctor's perspective on a cross-section of their patients at various stages of life and health.
Tom's narration of his own work breathes life into the 'book'.
My own (patient) experience of doctors in England has been quite positive and Tom is a great example of the best of these.
I recommend this book for anyone considering a career in the medical profession here as well as for anyone else with the slightest curiosity about what a typical doctor may encounter or looking to hear about those 34 patients - that 0.00005% (approx) of the UK population which were selected my Dr. Templeton between them represent illnesses and afflictions which will impact all of us (directly or indirectly) in our lifetimes.
Thanks, Tom, Dr. Templeton for taking the time to write the book and, later, narrate it so well.
One, tiny, tiny issue with the Audiobook is that the Epilogue is repeated - a bonus 1min 51 secs some may say :)

Extremely informative
I really enjoyed listening to this book, and it gave me a sense of empathy for doctors and just people in general and what they go through, and sometimes not everything we see is that it is as how it is fantastic read reader voice was great as well
