Summary
There's no going back to Earth. The only way forward is through hell.
After the explosive events surrounding MPF6's destruction on Karkin Four, Wic and his team of daredevil operators join forces with the rebel force known as the Blood Guard. While the Phantoms desire to help relocate human refugees to safer worlds, they're forced to confront a more pressing objective: cut off the head of the beast and keep the Androchidan Empire from enslaving another world.
Wic is immediately flung into the heat of battle, driven by retaliation, a need for justice, and the need to send a message to all other deviant species who'd wish to take advantage of the innocent: don't even think about it.
However, when a convert mission goes sideways, and key Blood Guard operatives turn up missing, Phantom Team must decide just how far they're willing to go to stop an alien species from wreaking havoc in the galaxy.
Tensions mount as the empire's high command closes in for the kill. Lies spread, secrets abound, and betrayal runs like blood in the streets. Will Sir Chuck provide critical intel in time to save the team? Can Wic pull one more hat trick against a world-conquering foe?
Find out in Valley of the Dead, the fifth nail-biting, white-knuckle episode of the acclaimed Ruins of the Earth series by Christopher Hopper and J.N. Chaney.

It's just not the same without RC Bray
I loved the first 4 books but try as I might I cant get in to this one, the narrator has killed it for me. I gave the story 3 stars only really because I had to check out due to the narration. I think I'll just read this one.

Good story, disappointing performance from a new narrator.
RC Bray was excellent in the previous books. The new voice actor is not at his level but to be fair, he grew into the role and I finished the book, having nearly bailed out after the first chapter. I even found myself getting a tear to my eye at one point. He did a good enough job to ensure that I'll listen to the next one but that's really because I'm invested in the story. Changing the voice actor was a massive mistake and I know many people will exit the franchise immediately.

Audio errors?
Something weird metallic with the audio. Compression artifact? Fair performance, but not as good as the previous reader.

OK so the narrator changed, still awesome
Oh how could this get better? Part of the story broke my heart but I still love the whole arc and how the books developed.
Yep the narrator changed, he did a cracking job under very very difficult circumstances and I think should be commended. Would rather the narrator change than it put more pressure on RC Bray and it take the next decade to get this book out....

A slip in qaulity
Contains Spoilers!
like: The story of fighting off world is exciting and expanding on the alien world is interesting. Jokes and some character development was nicely done.
dislike: change in narrator was not fun, the difference between the original to the new was not great, such a shame and made the story hard to listen to. Killing off characters like that too was also a bad move as they had more to give. A shame, sadness for a great series.

Continues a good story, well performed
Changing narrator mid series is always tricky and when the previous narrator is R C Bray, well, one extremely tough act to follow. Nevertheless Christopher Ryan Grant does a very good job, well done! The phantoms get into deeper trouble and things turn dark and grim, then, light at the end of the tunnel, but is it an oncoming train? Looking forward to the next book in the series!

One book too many?
I enjoyed the previous books in this series but this one felt like it was just milking the original story.
It feels like this book is just continuous fighting with no obvious purpose or end goal. Everything seems to have been given an acronym- too many to remember.
It's a shame as, as I said, I enjoyed the previous books.

A Good Continuation
An enjoyable listen, wraps up a few key plotlines and sets up some more. Looking forward to the next one. Will be interesting to see how the story pans out and if it can be done without going overboard in an attempt to keep the pace and action flowing.
Not having the same narrator for the whole series is very jarring and R.C. Bray is a very good narrator for these kinds of books. So a tough act to follow.
