About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Craig Alanson comes a thrilling new series that melds action-packed urban fantasy with his signature humor, read by none other than award-winning narrator R.C. Bray.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet.

I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why?

I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know. I don’t have a wand or a sword, and I don’t ride a dragon. I carry a Glock, and drive around in a beat-up RV with a talking dog.

Yeah. The talking dog was a surprise to me, too. Duke is inhabited by the spirit of a 3,000-year-old wizard from Babylon, and he’s a good dog, but he is still a dog, and that’s a problem. Like, he still thinks squirrels are his mortal enemy. And that I don’t feed him enough. How did the spirit of a wizard reach across millennia, to our time? I don’t know.

The truth is, I’m not much of a wizard, because there’s not much magic in the world for me to work with. But there used to be magic. And magic is coming back as our world converges with the Nether.

Unless I can stop it.

Fantastic, inventive funny & exciting story

It’s the first book I’ve read from this author and I loved, loved, loved it. I have already recommended it to friends, family & online buddies and will be exploring other books from the same author as soon as I complete this review.

Anyway the book. It has many classic urban fantasy tropes but manages to shine with inventive originality and twists on the norm too.

Duke is clearly heading for canine stardom within the genre and as an avid UF fan & a dog lover his personality was a constant delight to me, often causing me to genuinely laugh out loud.

Considering this is the first book, of hopefully a very long running series, the necessary scene setting, character intros & background blah blah were woven skilfully into the story as it went along. I already care about the protagonist, who is learning who & what he is, making mistakes and accepting limitations, as he goes along. I also love the eclectic supporting cast; displaced, but determined, time travelling warriors; a very reticent spirit of an ancient ‘wizard’; a megalomaniac & clearly rouge like jinn, FBI agents, secret archaic agencies; gangsters and food, lots of food!

The narration was perfect so I hope the same person will do future books as quality narration always enhances an audiobook series for me. After 2-3 books a good narrator can be as much as part of the series’ success as the author’s skill with writing the story.

Anyway to sum up. Inventive, and often laugh out loud funny, beginning to a ripping yarn that any UF fans (& dog lovers) should really enjoy. Can’t wait for the next book. I will be definitely following this author.

Dynamic Duo (Alanson and Bray) does it again

Really enjoyed it and can't wait for book 2.
Craig's witty writing, especially on some of the absurdities of modern life, along with R.C. Bray's impeccable delivery, a superb tried and trusted combination. More Please!

Excellent start to a great new series

I'm not usually a fan of urban fantasy, but due to my liking for Joe, Skippy and the band of monkeys, I thought I'd give this a go and it didn't disappoint. Good characters with well paced back stories, trademark humour and sciencey exposition, all brought to life by the truly excellent RC Bray, if anyone can make a talking dog credible RC's your man. There's some very clever cultural references thrown in to help underpin the story and the narrative device of seeing our bonkers modern world through some of the characters eyes, is extremely interesting and funny.

Overall a great beginning to a whole new series and I can't wait for the next installment. Right where's Columbus Day, I'm going to start again in time for Book 15 of Skippy & Co😁😁

Trust in the Awesomeness of Craig Alanson

Craig Alanson does it again with a superb start to his new series of novels. And with the Magnificence of RC Bray bringing the world to life thus series is going to rock.
If you are a fan of Skippy the Magnificent then you will love the world of Kaz and Duke.

An interesting new new line

I don't normally like wizardy stuff, but cos I like the expeditionary stories and Mr Grey's interpretation I thought I'd give it a try. The same old excellent descriptive Alanson narrative was still there together with the funny quips and jokes. Mr Bray and his many many voices adds to the enjoyment of the the story. it's modern day sùpernatural settings was also intriguing. It was also set up with a funny side kick to the main character. Two in this instance. Apart from space travel it had everything the expeditionary books had at the early start of wheat seems to be like a bit of a saga. My only quibble is that I kept hearing Jo Bishop and Skippy in the background. otherwise a good listen and will take Mr Alanson and co up on the next issue. I just hope that in writing this story there isn't a delay in getting the next expeditionary story out there.

Not as good as ex force

Just a little slow on the pacing compared to ex force. Worth a listen though.
