About this listen

A chilling new version of Susan Hill’s classic ghost story, narrated by Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project).

Eel Marsh house stands alone, surveying the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Mrs Alice Drablow lived here as a recluse. Now Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor with a London firm, is summoned to attend her funeral, unaware of the tragic and terrible secrets which lie behind the house's shuttered windows.

It is not until he glimpses a young woman at the funeral with a wasted face, dressed all in black, that a sense of profound unease begins to creep over him, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk about the woman in black or what happens whenever she is seen.

Kipps has to stay on in the lonely house, sorting out Mrs. Drablow's papers. The mist begins to enshroud it and the surrounding graveyard and the high tide cuts it off from the outside world....

Wonderfully creepy

I’ve read the book and watched the films however, the audiobook is fantastic, the background sounds make it more realistic. The narration is calm but takes you inside the story, I love it.
I couldn’t listen to this while working late at night because it’s really scary so I listened during the day! :)

Super natural

This was just the job for listening to on the dark nights before Christmas. Really spooky.

Best Version Ever

I have read the book, seen the stage show, watched both versions of the filtm, and can confidently say this is the best version of the story, ever. Paapa is phenomenal as the narrator, but the sound effects had me literally looking over my shoulder. The best adaptation of a fantastically spooky story anyway. 100% recomended x

In the whole, very good.

Nicely written, good story.
I would have given this five stars if not for some silly mistakes: a house with 60 years of dust, but one of the first properties in the UK to have electricity right through the home??? such a shame. Otherwise very good.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Atmospheric and immersive.
Great to have a dramatised version that is unabridged.
A fantastic performance from Paapa Essiedu.
I found the film scarier but this made me jump a few times.

Outstanding story. Paapa’s voice is perfect

This story is so clever. The story line is very emotive and that comes out as the story progresses. What I like most is that it’s not just ghostly goings-on for the sake if it - there is real human emotion behind the haunting events that take place, from the ghost herself. A very cleverly written story, which drew me in and which resonated with me, emotionally. Stunning writing!

Amazing narration

Wow, absolutely loved the narration. The sound effects too made you feel like you were there within the story.. only marked 1 star down because I would have liked the story a bit scarier!
