About this listen
“Hell House is the scariest haunted house novel ever written. It looms over the rest the way the mountains loom over the foothills.” — Stephen King
From the author of I Am Legend comes Hell House, the basis for the supernatural horror film starring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill.
For over twenty years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mount Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity. But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townsfolk refer to it as the Hell House.
Hell House, which inspired the 1973 film The Legend of Hell House, is Matheson’s most frightening and shocking book and an acknowledged classic of the genre.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Any additional comments?
Did I enjoy this audio book - yes, I wanted a good ghost story for Christmas and I got one. Well read. Occassionally you are at the right point in life to listen to something, if I had listened to this a year ago for example I may not of enjoyed it - but I got this at the right time and it was spot on.

pretty good
I rather enjoyed it, the story reminded me of haunting of hill House. the story teller was great although I did find the women's voices to be similar but it's easy enough to figure out who is who. the story it self does drag in parts and gets better around chapter 20. I could easily imagine this as a TV series. if you're thinking about listening to it go for it, it wasn't very scary but I did feel engaged and interested enough to keep listening.

Totally absorbing!
Just excellent! A great ghost story! Mr Matheson certainly knew how to write a haunted house tale!
At times the characters crept around my head and I was there - so there, looking at the fear in their eyes - Totally absorbing!!
Spooky stuff!
Ray Porter's narration was most excellent!

Real good
It was a very good story - kept me wanting to keep listening and keep going back to it. The narration was perfect - very well read and some good twists and turns. Great level of gore and spookiness. Worth a credit!

A terrifying horror classic
I read this book a few years ago, before I joined Audible. But when I did, this was one book I immediately had to get a copy of. It starts off slowly, and when I first read it, I was thinking come on, not much happening here, where's the tention? The horror? But I kept reading, and suddenly, there it was, Matheson hit me with it all at once. Once this book gets going, it doesn't let up. Ray Porter narrates this really well, portraying emotions brilliantly. It's one of those books you have to read for a while before it gets going, but then all at once it's in front of you, and by then it's too late. Hell House certainly had me captive, tha'ts for sure! Some really bloody scenes, to, sex, and violence. A terrifying horror classic, I'd recommend it to any horror fans who enjoyed Halloween, the haunted forest tour, etc. If you haven't read it yet, go on, enter Hell house.
If you dare...

This is easily one of the best haunted house stories I’ve ever read or listened to. Ray Porter reads it so well!

Excellent listen
I really enjoyed this book. It had a great story and good interplay between the four characters that enter the house. Not overly scary by today?s standards although it does keep you interested from start to finish. Passionately narrated.
I would warn anyone intending to listen to this book that it contains material of a sexually explicit nature and also graphic language. This book is not for people who are offended by this sort of thing, as it permeates most of the book. Personally, I think that for a book titled 'Hell House' and with the reputation that it has, it would be naive to be shocked to hear the occasional expletive or references to sexual violence - As a horror book, this is not gratuitous, but part of the story.
