About this listen

She's the only woman he wants...and the only one he can't have.

Asher Donovan is a living legend—the darling of the Premier League, the (arguably) greatest footballer in the world.

But his reckless antics and recent team transfer have caused much controversy, and when his feud with his rival-turned-teammate costs them a championship, they’re forced to “bond” during off-season cross-training.

Surviving the summer shouldn’t be hard…until Asher meets their new trainer. She’s beautiful, talented, and no matter how hard he tries, he can’t take his mind off her.

The only problem? She’s his rival’s sister—and completely off limits.

***

Scarlett DuBois is a former prima ballerina whose career was cut short by a tragic accident.

Now a teacher at a prestigious dance academy but still haunted by the ghosts of her past, the last thing she wants is to spend the summer cross-training Asher Donovan, of all people.

She swore she would never date a footballer, but when her brother leaves town for an emergency, she finds herself thrown into dangerously close proximity with the gorgeous, charming striker.

Training, she can deal with. But falling in love? That’s out of the question—especially when he’s the only person with the power to break her heart.

Editorial Review

A sexy start to a new sports series
A football romance from Ana Huang? Yes, please! The Twisted and Kings of Sin author scores big time with her first sports romance, the story of a Premier League footballer who falls for his rival’s sister, a former prima ballerina. While I don’t come across it often, I really love duet-style narration –where each performer reads the dialogue and action of their character across all chapters – and here, narrators Shane East and Stella Hunter make Huang’s sexy banter truly shine, volleying back and forth to create the most delicious romantic tension. Their charming accents and smooth delivery of swoony heartfelt words had me pining for Asher and Scarlett to find their happily ever after. I can’t wait to hear what Huang has for us next in this sporty series. —Margaret H., Audible Editor

the narrattion by Shane East and Stella Hunter is amazing

I'm always excited for the start of a new series especially when it's a change in trope from the author. Having never read a sport's romance by Ana Huang, I was intrigued!

The characters were fairly typical as to what you'd expect from a book where a very successful footballer meets a lovely woman in the course of his career.

However, with the secret and forbidden aspect of a hated team mate's younger sister storyline, it makes The Striker that wee bit different.

Add in some cameo appearances from characters we've already met and loved in a previous series and ' holy crossover Batman', you've got yourself a winner!

Additionally, with a team of English Premier League footballers, there are endless possibilities of where this debut of Gods of the Game series will will lead us to next!

I loved this one!

When I saw this was going to be a sports romance, I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, what we got was a fun and addictive read. I love that it was a football (soccer) sports romance rather than the usual American football. It made it different and exciting. Asher was well, Asher. We've seen bits and pieces of him in other Ana books, and I was glad to finally see all of him. Bring in your rivals' sister, and yes, you have a winning combination. I loved the tension and chemistry between Asher and Scarlett. The narrators Shane East and Stella Hunter captured these characters perfectly and had me falling in love with this story! I can't wait for whatever Ana has next for us!

A Forbidden Romance with a Few Stumbles

Striker had an intriguing setup with instant attraction leading to a slow-burn, forbidden romance. I came in with high expectations, so I felt a bit let down. Both main characters were strong individuals, but the MMC’s sudden character flaw felt random, and using it as the reason for their breakup before the final reunion seemed unnecessary. The tension around revealing their relationship to the FMC’s brother was more than enough to carry the story. Overall, while the romance was enjoyable, the added conflict felt like overkill.

Asher & Scarlet

4.25 stars

Holy Moly Shane East is h0t as Asher Donovan!!!
Asher is c0cky and reckless, the GOAT of football/soccer. Scarlett is humble, witty and funny, a prima ballerina whose wings got clipped way too soon. Their meet is the ultimate hat3-cute and I was all there for it!! Despite all that is said about Asher is very supportive and caring which give him perfect swoon book boyfriend qualities :) :)
Stella Hunter voices Scarlett and I would normally love her performance but I wasn’t so keen on the British accent. She was still great but the accent would come and go every now then, distracting me a little from the story.

Female voice ruins it

The female narrator is utterly unbearable. It’s entirely distracting. The accents are laughable and even Shane East’s excellence cannot carry it. My advice; read it the old fashioned way instead.
