Summary

Centuries ago, the magic left our world...

The magicians went with it, stepping into the Gates to Mystic Albion and leaving OldeWorld—Earth—forever. Since then, the two worlds have remained separate, until now.

Three young magicians, experimenting with dangerous spells, find themselves accidentally transported to the world their ancestors fled. Finding friends and allies, they try to blend in as they struggle to find a way back to their home, unaware that danger lurks in the shadows of a very alien world...

...And that they are already running out of time.

Wrong setting

Honestly, if this were set in London then it would be more plausible, Birmingham or Manchester maybe. Not York that sort of sink estate, sexual violence in schools and venal policing in York is more absurd than magic portals.

a good series in the making but a difficult start.

I am a big fan of the author, bought and listened to loads of his books, but I found the start of this series heavy going . the premise is great, a parallel world that mirrors earth that has magic and a crossover between the 2. However, the start is set in York, England, a city I know well. It's a very genteel city with lots of historic buildings, including roman. it is also very well to do. but the author paints a very dark picture of it and british life in general, which would have better suited to a fictional place. it also makes out that in every british school, rape is common, and multiple rapists go unchallenged. to my mind, this is way too dark a premise for the series and detracts from the story. Once you get past this, however, the story gets much better and moves much quicker, and overall, the story is worth persevering with. I am hoping that part 2 is a much lighter tone and not so depressing.
