Summary

All it took was one small item on the regional news for Kimberly Guyver and Rachel Golinski to know that their old life was catching up with them. They wondered how they’d been naïve enough to think it wouldn’t. DC Goodhew begins to sift through their lives, and starts to uncover an unsettling picture of deceit, murder, and accelerating danger. Kimberly seems distraught but also defensive and uncooperative. Is it fear and mistrust of the police which are putting her son at risk, or darker motivations? With Riley’s life in peril, Goodhew needs Kimberly to make choices, but she has to understand, the one thing she cannot afford is another mistake.
Alison Bruce is a scriptwriter and author of two non-fiction crime books. She was born in Surrey but moved to Cambridge in 1998. She is married with two small children and enjoys horse riding and dancing, when not working on her new crime fiction series featuring D C Gary Goodhew. This is the second DC Goodhew novel.

Not just another detective story!
Having thought the characters a little unbelievable in the first book, they have settled into a more natural rhythm here. The author easily brings together human emotion, doubt, fear, love, insecurity, loyalty (& so much more) & in a way that only enhances the complex story line, which will keep you guessing till the end..... x

Second DC Goodhew book
This is the second DC Goodhew book set in Cambridge, UK. High flying Gary Goodhew, a young Detective Constable, does things his own way. His colleagues and superiors just let him as he seems to be able to get the results they want.
A reasonable story but not 5 star. 🌟

Character distinction
I liked the reader's voice and his performance except for the difficulty in distinguishing different characters in quick response conversations.

Another Goodhew Winner
The Cambridge series continues with another enjoyable story. A Fire A missing Child & many good twists. The police characters present superb entertainment with their complex interactions including a new rookie PC. Jonathan is truly brilliant as narrator. Bravo.

Very good story
I really enjoyed this book, I re-read 'Cambridge Blue' before picking this up as I wanted to remind myself of the series. I enjoyed this book even more than I did CB, I felt that I got to know and understand Gary Goodhew and found him to be a good person and very likeable.
The story was quite complex, and I was led up a blind alley several times and was gripped by the story and surprised by the ending.
Jonathon Broadbent read really nicely, I felt very comfortable with his voice and the personalities. I'm off to catch up on the rest of the series.

Mediocre narration of uninteresting story
I kept waiting for the story to get going but it meandered on with characters thrown in at random. The narrator made absolutely no effort to differentiate between them, nor even much difference for male and female voices.
I’d like to know who chooses the narrators for Audible books? Mostly, they’re very good but occasionally you get a real dud like this one. Doesn’t the author have a say? Surely the sound editor should flag up when the recording is as uninspiring as this?
Give this one a miss.

Not the best
Having now heard the first four books in the series, I still cannot see any reason to give these books more than a two star rating. My review of the first four books is the same.
Far too much detail, too many characters too soon, and too long before the main character makes an appearance to solve the crimes.
There is dialogue which cannot be easily attributed to a character due to the lack of signposting, and other passages which come across as convoluted.
Anything is possible in fiction, but there still has to be a believable element. A police force where the youngest detective is allowed to do what he pleases and has an unchecked, unhealthy, rivalry with a colleague, for me at least, is a step too far.
Book one, I thought I’d strayed into the romance section. Book three could have been from the adult section. As for book four, I could have wandered into the Twilight Zone.
Needless to say, I will not be completing the series, and I may have to be more careful about ordering books in a series.
