Summary
Horrifying, heartbreaking and eye-opening, these are the stories, the patients and the cases that have characterised a career spent behind bars.
The no-holds-barred memoirs of a GP who went from working at a quiet suburban practice to treating the country’s most dangerous criminals - first in young offenders’ institutions, then at the notorious Wormwood Scrubs and finally at Europe’s largest women-only prison in Europe, Bronzefield.

Good book.
An interesting insight into life behind bars. Sad, but sometimes hopeful stories of people who have taken different journeys to end up in prison.

good.. in some aspects
the most annoying narrative voice, all the unnecessary accents seemed disrespectful, even when some characters were introduced as educated and cultivated the narrator gave them a cockney accent and overall flair to the character that drove me insane. The book was okay, seemed a bit repetitive and not very interesting, listened it all in one sitting, was expecting to be medically informative which came as a disappointment.

Ending Abrupt
Story interesting, but as usual, Audible has no respect for the listener, and the book ends abruptly.

As prescribed
I note there are a few criticism of this book.
Personally for me, I found it very insightful. Knowing nothing of the prison system, but a fair amount of the medical system, Dr Brown came across as empathetic and professional and certainly not patronising as a previous reviewer had stated.
Dr Brown, wrote about her personal life throughout the book and her personal thoughts on situations, which made her more empathetic to the lives of prisoners.
Narration was clear, and tones, accents and genders were expressed with ease.
Highly recommend if you want to know about prison doctors.

A really great, concise and interesting book.
This was a good insight into prisons and the doctoring thereof. I think, much like in Orange Is The New Black, that by being a good person the author brought out the best in the people she interacted with. This means there isn't much confrontation and you generally see everyone painted in a good light or at least through a good lens.
Like with all prison books there are horror stories of razor blades and claw hammers but by and large those are kept to a minimum. The author seems to write more about the people than the gore of their situation.
The book is brief too. I got through all six hours in one headphone-based day. The narration starts out slightly robotic but by the end I though it was decent.
My only real criticism is that the author comes across as a sort of saint and, while that might be a fair depiction based on her work, it rubs me the wrong way a little that her internal monologue is written in that way.
I would say if you enjoy prison lit, such as Orange Is The New Black, or medical stories, like This Is Going To Hurt, then you should definitely read this. If not, read it anyway; it's short and interesting.

intriguing insight
If you love to know all the gory details and are fascinated by true life crime and medicine this is an intriguing listen. I really enjoyed the telling and found the content quite eye opening.

Thank God it's them instead of you...
Doc (as the prisoners call her) Brown quit her cosy, country practice in protest at the imposition of yet another new GP contract, and decided to find a new challenge. And what a challenge, a female doctor first in A boy’s youth prison, then the notorious Wormwood Scrubs and latterly the UK’s largest women’s prison. The lives that caused most to end up in prison are perhaps the biggest eye-opener, the extent of the drug abuse that must be all around us and the abusive men who led a majority of the women to end up inside. There’s some pretty ghastly stuff, as you might expect. But what makes this a must-read is the compassion which she shows and her, and most working in the prisons’, real desire to make a difference. In jobs which most of us just thank God someone wants to do.

bad narration
the narrator really let's the story down, more suited to a bed te story than a prison book
