Summary

Dublin, 1984: Jim Finnegan is thirteen years old, the youngest in a family of five sisters.

After a drunken yet delicate rendition of 'The Fields of Athenry' at a party, Jim captures both the attention of the beautiful Saidhbh Donohue and the unwanted desires of the devious Father O'Culigeen.

Between his growing love for Saidhbh and the abuse O'Culigeen subjects him to, Jim's life starts to unravel.

Ireland before the bingey bangey stuff happened

This book was shocking, thought provoking and above all hilarious. I don’t know if it is because i'm Irish and got all the "in jokes" but it took me to another time in Ireland when people really lived like this. Before the boom and bust Ireland and all the worldliness it brought with it. I could identify with the parochial views and the closeted lifestyles. The story is excellently told and you get so wrapped up in Jim’s world that in parts you fear so much for what’s coming next that you can hardly read on.

It’s hard to believe now, that the church in Ireland once had that much control during my generations upbringing. If you knew Ireland of the 80s this is a must read. The language, the attitudes and the people were described so well I thought I was back there, before all that bingey bangey stuff happened. My favorite book for the last year or so.

Looking forward to Kevin’s next book.

Kharmic Fields

This wasn't what I expected it to be at all. The story began quite serenely then delved into deeper, troubled fields. An Irish family, the only boy among five sisters is trying to cope with pretty trying obstacles - bullying, terminal illness, first love, unwanted love. Give it a listen, it's well worth it.

A lovely book

This is one of those beautifully crafted listens that keeps you awake later than you should be! I found myself listening at every given opportunity. The characters are full of life and there is a wonderful mix of humour and darker material that made me gasp. All in all one of my favourites.

Great listen

Great storyline and listen, interesting characters and plot. Love the accent. Especially enjoyed the family scenes at home in Ireland, very nostalgic.

Brilliant listen

The story was uplifting, funny and poignant. I found myself laughing out loud regularly while also feeling the pain he suffered from the abuse. The narrator was brilliant.
