About this listen

YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU CAN’T HIDE....

Kate Irving arrives at her grandfather’s cottage at Frenchman’s Creek in the dead of night with her young son, a small suitcase and little else. Its scattered community of fishermen, farmers, artists and jetsetters barely bat an eyelid, because theirs is a rarefied world, tucked beneath the lush forest that lines the banks of the Helford Estuary, deep in the heart of Cornwall, where life is slow and people generally mind their own business. Unless, of course, your grandfather happens to be a pillar of the local community....

Kate’s left the past behind and guards her privacy and her son fiercely. She’s wary of accepting the friendship her new neighbours offer, but their kindness is too great to refuse and she begins to feel she has found her place in the world. That is, until tragedy strikes, and her new friends look to her for the answers....

Kate soon learns that the past always catches up with you, in the end—the question is, will she be able to face it, when it does?

Suspense is peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced mystery, set amidst the spectacular Cornish landscape.

Harmless enough!

All a bit sugary sweet whilst skating round domestic abuse and murder! Easy enough to listen to but the super melodramatic tone of the narrator at the end of each chapter was jarring. Glad it was included in membership rather than I paid for that!

Very enjoyable listen.

I disagree with a previous reviewer. Narration was appropriate and gentle on my ears. Whilst the end was perhaps predicable the path to that ending was not. I also enjoyed the description of cornish landscapes which reminded me of my holidays in that area.

Enjoyable.

Very different from Ryan and his team. Books I've loved and followed from the beginning. Another type of detective novel, with romance and domestic violence issues. The narration was excellent. Not easy task doing the Cornish dialect. Well worth it especially while it's included in the plus catalogue.

Let down by unbelievable ending!

The performance by the narrator was excellent, even though her regional accents may not have been perfect this didn’t detract from the story.
There were two main storylines, escape from an abusive relationship and an unsolved tragedy from the past . I think the author must have wanted to finish the book quickly. The initial domestic violence storyline was believable but descended into chaos. My main concern is that the conclusion to the unsolved murders was unbelievable. Difficult to explain without giving the plot away but I really feel the perpetrator wouldn’t have behaved the way they did .

easy listen

Easy story line that keeps you entertained. Narration is varied enough also. Some bits predictable but still enjoyed.

Nicely paced, never dull, realistic characters

An accurate and sobering expose of possessiveness and abuse, and the depths of cruelty offset against the triumphs of the human spirit. All in a lovely maritime setting.
