About this listen

When it comes to exploring haunted citadels, you should always carry a weapon, trust no one and, most important of all, remember the golden rule: Let sleeping gods lie. There are some far-fetched rumours about the caverns beneath the Citadel: Some say the mages left their most dangerous secrets hidden there; others, that great riches are hidden there; even that gods have been imprisoned in its darkest depths.

For Lord Frith, the caverns hold the key to his vengeance. Against all the odds, he has survived torture and lived to see his home and his family taken from him...and now someone is going to pay.

For Wydrin of Crosshaven and her faithful companion, Sir Sebastian Carverson, a quest to the Citadel looks like just another job. There's the promise of gold and adventure. Who knows, they might even have a decent tale or two once they're done.

But sometimes there is truth in rumour. Sometimes it pays to listen. Soon this reckless trio will become the last line of defence against a hungry, restless terror that wants to tear the world apart. And they're not even getting paid.

A breath of fresh air for a familiar genre

Whilst on the surface, this may seem like familiar territory to fans of fantasy- a pseudo medieval setting, a young thief, a mage and a knight uniting for a quest, strange beasts, magic weapons and, or course, dragons. However, Ms Williams brings something new that reinvigorates these tropes, bringing a touch of 21st century cultural and social relevance to the fantasy world.
It's also a fantastic read. Jen Williams has created a rich world, fascinating, dynamic characters and a wonderful story that grows into an epic saga.

Brilliant adventure.

A wonderfully rich adventure of monsters, magic and mystery. Colourful characters, both good and evil. The narration was good, it just fell down for me on certain characters, but didn't spoil my emersion at all. Definitely worth a listen or read.

A good listen

What did you like most about The Copper Promise?

A good story with and excellent narration. Well worth the listen and provides an interesting intake into human nature whilst making you laugh along the way. The narration is well spoken with good characterization and draws you into the story and keeps you listening. For those who like fantasy reading (like Terry Pratcheet and Neil Gaimen), I'd say this is a must

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Copper Cat due to her cynical outlook on life

Have you listened to any of Toni Green’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Narration is Awful!!!

I had to order a hard copy of this book (referred to by my husband as an ‘eyedible’) as I could not bear listening to the appalling narration, although I was actually enjoying the storyline. The narrator was very stilted, creating pauses/commas every few seconds with no understanding or conception of the overall impact of their rendition of the text on the audience. In addition the speaking voices created by the narrator were very one dimensional and irritatingly high pitched. This is a definite ‘read don’t listen’.

Not for me

I did not take to the characters, they are too young for their accomplishments. The story is predictable and the narrator’s voice is not for me. There is some great fantasy out there but this one is off the mark.

Voice clicks

I couldn't listen to another second. The clicks and horrible mouth noises of the narrator were soo off putting I couldn't focus on the content. Sorry narrator.
