About this listen

It is the year 1715, and Thomas True has arrived on old London Bridge with a dangerous secret. One night, lost amongst the squalor of London's hidden back streets, he finds himself drawn into the outrageous underworld of the molly houses.

Meanwhile, carpenter Gabriel Griffin struggles to hide his double life as Lotty, the mollies' silent guard. When the queen of all 'he-harlots', Mother Clap, confides in him about a deadly threat, he realises his friends are facing imminent execution. To the horror of all mollies, there is a rat amongst them, betraying their secrets to a pair of murderous Justices, hell-bent on punishing sinners with the noose.

Can Gabriel unmask the traitor before it's too late? Can he save hapless Thomas from peril, and their own impossible love?

The Betrayal of Thomas True

I had already read the novel and fell in love with the characters, so decided to see what the audio book was like, to see if the characters became more 3 dimensional. I have to say that the narrator did a perfect job on this. I loved the change in voices as each character came to the front. I highly recommend this novel in hardback, ebook or audio book. A beautifully written story. I look forward to the authors next read.

Not my usual type of book…

But absolutely loved every minute of it. A thriller. A love story. Amazing. A jolly jape around 16th/17th century London.

Funny, compassionate and devastating

Such a sweet story of love and compassion. Don’t let that fool you though. There is nothing twee here. The characters are so likeable and often hilarious but you always know that nothing good can come to them just because of who they are. It made me cry

Good but at times frustrating whodunnit

This is a gripping thriller with a whodunnit vibe and a unique setting. The writer really brings London's nnof the time to life. The narrative at times gets slightly repetitive as chapters continually build to a revelation that never comes. The reader also has a repetitive and jarring voice for narrative sections though he does excel at the dialogue. Mainly good, but sections felt padded.

Great story, nice twist and turns and romance

I saw AJ West promoting this book on TikTok and I was so pleased when I saw that it was also an audiobook. Really enjoyed the story and the characters, Peter Kenny really brought the characters to life. Throughly enjoyed this story.

The dangers of forbidden love

An engaging love story set in the early 18th century.
The betrayal of all. Characters you love and hate and a relationship that you will to succeed. My only regret was that I got to the last page.
The performer took me a couple of chapters to get used to but I'm glad I persevered.
