Summary
1333. Edward III is at war with Scotland. Nineteen-year-old Sir Harry de Lyon yearns to prove himself and jumps at the chance when a powerful English baron, William Montagu, invites him on a secret mission with a dozen elite knights.
They ride north, to a crumbling Scottish keep, capturing a feral, half-starved boy within and putting the other inhabitants to the sword.
But nobody knows why the flower of English knighthood snuck over the border to capture a savage, dirty teenage boy. Montagu gives the boy to Harry as his squire, with only two rules: don't let him escape, and convert him to the English cause.
At first, it's hopeless. The Scottish boy is surly and violent and eats anything that isn't nailed down. Then Harry begins to notice things: that, as well as Gaelic, the boy speaks flawless French, with an accent much different from Harry's Norman one. That he can read Latin too. And when Harry finally convinces the boy – Iain mac Maíl Coluim – to cut his filthy curtain of hair, the face revealed is the most beautiful thing Harry has ever seen.
With Iain as his squire, Harry wins tournament after tournament and becomes a favourite of the King. But underneath the pageantry smoulder twin secrets: Harry and Iain's growing passion for each other, and Iain's mysterious heritage. As England hurtles towards war once again, these secrets will destroy everything Harry holds dear.

A lovely gay historical romance
Suspend belief and get swept away in an epic love story between Harry & Liam, the steamy but are pretty good too😁. Beautifully narrated, as well, I could have fallen in love with his voice.

Thoroughly Engaging. 10 out of 5 stars.
Most of the time when I’m listening to an audiobook it is during my commute to and from work, they really help eat up the time, especially when stuck in traffic. However, after I began listening to The Scottish boy I couldn’t stop as I arrived home as I needed to know what was going to happen next, and so continued listening through the night and into the rest of the next day.
The story was so engaging and it was beautifully told by Richard Pearce, whose tone of narration, variety of voices and accents kept me riveted.
This was not the typical two dimensional enemies to lovers trope that 95% of that genre tend to be, but a well thought out semi historical roller coaster of a novel, with a believable series of situations, annoying miscommunications, sympathetic protagonists and a dark side running through the story that you fear for the safety of the MCs many times over. I laughed, almost cried and thoroughly enjoyed the two way banter and relationship that grew between Harry and Iain.
My only complaint, about the book was that I wished the epilogue had been longer. I felt that I deserved something more for having my emotions ripped apart for the best part of two days.
That said, it didn’t stop me from doing something that I have never done with an audiobook before. After finishing it I started to re-listen to it straight away, but this time in my usual way driving to work.
This is deffinately the best audiobook I have listened to all year and I can imagine it to be one that will get many more listens over the years.
