Summary
Morgan's life is not easy. Growing up on the streets of City Four, he is constantly shunned by the other citizens. Morgan doesn't mind being ignored. What he does mind, though, are the constant beatings from the city guards due to his friendship with Sarah, the city lord's only daughter. Lord Simon wants him dead, but the laws of the kingdom are on Morgan’s side and even the guards won't kill him, just for being seen near his manor.
Morgan’s time is running out, though. Lord Simon has deep pockets and his last visit to the manor may just have put him over the edge. Worse, he is nearing his 16th birthday, and has yet to awaken any abilities. In a world where might makes right, he has never been one of the mighty. What will he do when faced with a life altering decision and just how will his decision impact those around him?

worth a listen 👂
Good usual story, MC struggles at the beginning and get an OP power. Being dense at 16 is totally OK and the brutally also feels real. If I had a power like that at 16 I would have invented any excuse just to use it!

Mostly a good read.
I did quite enjoy this book. Is it the best of this genre of fantasy fiction? Not so much, but it is certainly worth a read if you like the LitRPG style of books. The story is solid enough and it looks like the plot is deep enough that it could run a very long series of books off it I would think - if he chooses to do that.
I liked the characters on the whole with one exception, and it seems to be a bad habit this author has, and one I don't understand. He has tons of violence and bad language in his books, but then treats sex like a darn ten-year-old boy. I truly don't know why he likes making teenage naïve virgins boys as his heroes, but is ridiculous at times. The main character is sixteen and was raised on the streets in an era where homeless kids would have had to resort too many things to survive, and that likely would include prostitution. So the MC being as mindlessly naïve to sex just came over as totally unbelievable.
In case you think I'm overdoing this, then here is an example. Someone tries to forcibly remove his female friends pants (trousers) and he sees the aftermath and asks her why on earth he was attacking her and trying to take her pants off. The book is littered with these type of events, and it took the shine off the book for me, as I need to believe in a characters actions in given situations, and I didn't in these type of scenes. It's also not the first book he has done like this, so I can help but wonder if this is some personal event the author is pinning to multiple characters, but it does seem odd when they can cut off heads without blinking, but act like a child about other subjects like sex.

Unsure about this series
Bought this because I picked up 'The Rules' publishers pack and quite enjoyed it, but after having listened to this I can't decide if I want to continue with the rest of these audiobooks or not. The main character is quite bloodthirsty and seems to lack basic human emotion the combination of which can make him hard to like, he's also ment to be a 16 year old boy but apparently has no concept of what sex is, and is seemingly just...well weird.
