Summary
Captain Bunn founded SOAR to develop effective methods for dealing with flight anxiety. Therapists who have found this phobia difficult to treat will find everything they need to give their clients success. Anxious flyers who have “tried everything” to no avail can look forward to joining the nearly 10,000 graduates of the SOAR program who now have the whole world open to them as they fly anxiety free wherever they want.
This approach begins by explaining how anxiety, claustrophobia, and panic are caused when noises, motions - or even the thought of flying - trigger excessive stress hormones. Then, to stop this problem, Captain Bunn takes the listener step-by-step through exercises that permanently and automatically control these feelings. He also explains how flying works, why it is safe, and teaches flyers how to strategically plan their flight, choose the right airlines, meet the captain, and so on. Through this program, Captain Bunn has helped thousands overcome their fear of flying. Now his book arms listeners with the information they need to control their anxiety and fly comfortably.

Very useful
Definitely worth listening. Some reading errors were not corrected in 1 of the chapters.

This works!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
I first read a printed copy of SOAR in 2014 and then also purchased a full online video program from Captain Tom. After not flying for 8 years because the terror was just too much to cope with, I have recently taken 4 flights - the last 2 on my own - and I had no panic at all. The last of the flights was even quite turbulent, and it didn’t bother me in the slightest. The techniques Capt Tom teaches are unbelievably effective, and the explanation of the theories and principles behind them are not only fascinating, but also helped me understand the root of my flying phobia and other anxiety issues.
I’ve just listened to the whole book as a SOAR ‘graduate’ and really enjoyed revisiting it with my recent flights in mind.
This is a genuinely life changing book and I will be eternally grateful to Capt Tom for helping me do what I never thought possible- to fly without panic.

Cured my fear
I’ve never fully been ok with flying, but love to travel and have always put up with it. A couple of years ago I got ill and caught covid during a flight, where I was then ill with long covid for a year after, this put me off flying to the point where I just refused to fly.
With knowing I needed to travel with my job and want to go on holiday again, I gave this audiobook a try. My word, it does work. My fear was nothing to do with safety of flying (but this book does work for this too), I was never worried about crashing, it was more of a claustrophobia, fear of being trapped, what if I get ill on the plane. This course gives really practical exercises like the strengthening exercises, so whatever your fear is about it works! I didn’t even do them as many times as the book suggests, and unconsciously my fear naturally lifted.
Whilst I did have quite a bit of anticipatory anxiety the days before the flight (the book said its normal and not reflective of how you will be on the flight). The morning of the flight I was super chilled, even excited to fly, when we got to the airport I didn’t have any of the usual physical symptoms of anxiety that I would previously get. I enjoyed the flight and being on holiday again, I could have even flew for longer!! Will be booking the next trip very soon.
Terrible editing on this audiobook, the author kept coughing but still worth listening to!

A shame it’s poorly executed
There’s some really good stuff in this book, and I mean really good.
What lets it down is the very poor version of the audiobook. None of the chapters are marked to help you reference, as well as the chapter numbers being out of sync. Also, the narrator keeps stopping to clear his throat and re-read lines. It’s like as if it was supposed to be edited but wasn’t!

I know this book will change my life
I listened to the audible version of this book as I knew it had alot of scientific jargon in it so I knight loose interest otherwise. this definitely was helpful and although I have yet to get on a plane again, I have booked a holiday and now don't have that fear or dread at the pure mention of flying.

Great tips
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It has given me some good tips for anxiety which will help with all sorts of scenarios, not just flying. Couldn’t recommend enough.

Really helped with fear of flying
A completely different look at the fear of flying compared to other books I’ve read / listened to.
Gives you all the tools you need to overcome your fear.
Overall the reading was spot on, but in parts it was laughable. Is it really that hard to edit those moments out for a more seamless listen?

Narrator coughs and splutters his way thru
I'm sure the content is good, however the production is not great, wooden delivery and the narrator coughs so many times, clears his throat and then starts again, appears they have never heard of editing, 7 mins into chapter 8 he must cough, and start again maybe 8 or 9 times but he does ur right from chapter one. Someone get this guy a glass of water
