About this listen

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

Fab

Wanted to listen to the actual book after loving the Netflix series so much and it really lives up to expectations! Lauren Fortgang is a brilliant narrator, I really enjoyed this story and will be reading the next ASAP.

Edgy

Like all YA, this book is pure angst and edgy! That’s that’s why it’s great.
The main character is sarcastic and I’m living for it.

*spoilers*

Shame the darkling turned out the be the villain, though suppose it’s good as it prevented to book from being predictable. Wasn’t really rooting to the other love interest, he seemed more like a brother in my opinion. Although this storyline might be developed more in future books.

Defiantly going be rewatching the Netflix series a few time.

A good listen overall

Not sure if I'm the only person who feels this is important info but this book is written in first person apart from the first and last chapter. Also, the narration is a little under-paced at first but this quickly changes and is definitely well suited throughout the majority of the book. I usually can't stand first person but it was good enough to make me want to hear the rest of the series. If you have come here from netflix this is only Alina's story line, other books by the author are intertwined with the show.

Welcome to the Grishaverse

The combination of Bardugos writing and Fortgangs performance has created such a wonderfully rich listening experience. Every character feels whole and distinct. I particularly love the scenes between Baghra and Alina, I feel they truly display how vibrant Fortgangs range is (as well as the joy that is Bardugos witty dialogue). The entire series is full of complex characters, thrilling storytelling and the kind of world building that ensures the reader/listener feels fully emersed. While these are categorised as YA fantasy, I (very much not YA) found them to be no less enjoyable. Highly recommend for all!

Good

Not as good as six of crows, so start there, but if you want more from grisha verse, then read this after.

Great narrative and voice.

Really enjoy the story. Was hoping that each character to portray in a suitable voice or sound.

Good story but performance was missing something.

I enjoyed the story...I think. I felt that the reading was lacking. I think a story that has such action needed a more dramatic reading.

...

I unfortunately came to the table late with the Grisha books and seem to have listened to them back to front, which I regret as I did not get as much enjoyment out of this book as I might have. That is not to say it was not a good book, though and I have enjoyed the series immensely.
