Summary
Welcome to The Glory - the world’s biggest VR tournament.
In front of millions of viewers, teams compete in a battle royale where they clear dungeons, complete quests and slay other players in a race to score the most points.
The winners are instant celebrities, and it's time Bash the Berserker joined their ranks. One win away from going pro, his dreams of fame, fortune and that iced coffee sponsorship are finally coming true...until he’s kicked off his team mere hours before registrations close.
With everything on the line, Bash manages to cobble together a new rag-tag team. A washed-up semi-pro who hates his guts, a talented analyst who’s never actually competed and a streamer whose ego is only surpassed by her love of throwing swords.
Oh, and if they want to earn their glory, Bash will have to trade in his war hammer and play as a three-foot-tall, tree-hugging elf....

Gaming taken to an entirely new level (literally)
I first came across Alex Kinght when I listened to The Far wild. If you're looking for a true adventure book which delivers with every single page and keeps you at the edge of your seat, then by God you'll love The far wild.
Alex has a unique way of befriending his readers with characters that you encounter every day. Some of the characters can even at times reflect the readers own personality in one way or another. With Rise to glory, I almost felt as though I was also interwoven in the story, to a point where I felt a slight loss of kinship when the book came to an end. Alex builds on his characters whilst at the same time bringing to life concepts and ideas of a world that starts to live and breathe its way into existence.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Some will quickly be drawn to ready player one but I think Alex has come up with a gaming experience unlike any story I've read or listened to. His ability to create an actual gaming experience with all the narratives and user interfaces is just genius. He hasnt just written a book, he's created an entire platform. I have to be honest, there were some parts where I was so tempted to forward and that wasn't because any of it was boring but more the contrary, I just couldnt wait to hear what happened next (kinda like being tempted to look up a walkthrough on YouTube, wink wink).
Rise to Glory is a nice easy listen with action, emotion and some pretty clever word plays that will make even the none gamers appreciate the artistry. The story isn't just about gaming, but it's also about the journey the characters take in their personal lives. From insecurities around leadership, to anxiety around past experiences, the characters have their own mountains to climb and conquer.
The narration was flawless, smooth and captured each moment.
If they ever makes a minecraft dungeons movie, Alex Kight, make sure you're on the production team. I can see a netflix series coming out of this.
Thanks Alex for such an amazing experience.

Oh Dear...
Caveat: Only Managed 5 Hours.
I bought this hoping it to be Ready Player One with a bit more depth. I was hopelessly wrong.
The main protagonist "Bash" is one of the most insufferable, unpleasant, whiny, irritating, entitled characters I've ever come across in a novel. I kept listening, hoping that he would find some redemption, but a third of the way in, he was still showing no signs of learning from his massive ego.
The over-arching story of "Hero MMO player gets kicked from his team because he is a nob" would have had legs if he'd learned from that, found some backbone, gained the support and trust of some strong friends and then gone on to beat the naysayers. Sadly though, he continued to whine and moan at his new team who stuck with him for reasons best known to themselves.
I just couldn't bear to listen any longer. It was like pouring vomit in my ears. Of course, I only listened to the first third. Perhaps I didn't give it enough time, but all I could see was 10 more hours of "players load into mission then do mission". I needed a glimpse that Bash was going to get his comeuppance or at least learn *something* positive. If it does get better, then you're going to need at least 5 hours of patience whilst silently wanting to find Bash's real life house and disconnect his broadband.
Not for me.
