About this listen
The 28th and final novel in the thrilling, wickedly funny Inspector Montalbano Mysteries series by best-selling author Andrea Camilleri.
‘Contrary to what you think, I’m carrying out this investigation as best I can. But let’s do this: if I get stuck, if I find I can’t go forward or back, then I’ll let you know, and you can step in. And offer me a way out. You’ve gained a bit of detective work through me, haven’t you? What do you say?’
‘I’m game,’ said the Author....
When Inspector Montalbano receives an early-morning phone call it proves to be the start of a very trying day. For the caller expects Montalbano to arrive imminently at a rendezvous with some friends. But before he can reply, the caller announces himself as someone called Riccardino and hangs up.
Later that day, news comes in of a brutal slaying in broad daylight by an unknown assassin who makes his getaway on a motorbike. And when the Inspector learns of the victim’s identity - a man called Riccardino - his troubles are only just beginning. For soon, he must contend with the involvement of a local bishop and a fortune teller who reports some strange goings-on in her neighbourhood.
All roads soon lead to a local salt mine, but the case proves stubbornly intractable until Montalbano receives another unexpected call....

Not up to usual Montalbano stories
Very disappointing. Fairly short for a book costing one credit but, to me as an avid Montalbano fan, this was a poor story with only a few of the usual characters and fairly simple storyline tha had no real ending; it was made even worse by frequent‘dialogue’ between Montalbano and the author which detracted from one immersing oneself in the story.

A unfortunately weak way to bow out.
Whereas Montalbano books had exuded Sicillian realism, this final mystery introduces characters and twists that take the reader on a journey you may not appreciate. Best give this one a miss.

Dismal
I thought this might have been a full blooded and engaging finale to a brilliant series but sadly not in the combative vein and no conclusions to the Livia situation or come uppance for Raganesse. The narrator seemed to have Caterellas vitals in the vice for this one which made him more ridiculous than ever. Whole thing just faded away.

A travesty
This is the saddest end to the Montalbano stories. The murder mystery lacks both the humanity of the previous stories and the warmth of the relationships between Montalbano and his long-suffering team. Montalbano himself has become a charmless bore. The novel is hamstrung by the author’s conceit of inserting himself in dialogue with Montalbano. The work is not worthy of Camilleri’s great talent and his publishers should never have allowed it to see the light of day

What a disappointment
As an avid fan of Montalbano the last two books were very lacklustre. Such an anticlimax and disappointing ending to the series. These much loved characters deserved better.

Awful conclusion
I love Montalbano and the series. However, this is really poor. I can’t help think that this wasn’t the real author but others trying to finish it for him. Sadly disappointed.

Emperor’s New Clothes
A total Montalbano/Camillieri fan here. So looked forward to this. It’s absolutely unbelievably bad. Even Mark Meadows descends into parody. I’m sure many people will disagree as it is the eagerly awaited last case but Camillieri definitely did not do anyone any favours. Could barely get to the end. I will always be grateful for the world of Montalbano both in the books and the RAI adaptations with the wonderful Luca Zingaretti but definitely out with a whimper and not a bang.

a sad ending to a great series of books
Sadly the voice artist does not do justice to the characters and the tales within the series of Montalbano
books.
