About this listen

For centuries, mankind has searched for nonhuman civilizations in the cosmos. These lost alien societies have finally been discovered—but they were destroyed long ago.

Devin Starn starts off as a lowly rock rat aboard Borag, a mining ship working the dangerous end of the asteroid belt. Slowly, he gains prestige and purpose. When an alien base is uncovered, however, he must risk everything to protect his ship and her crew.

What wiped out all the civilizations that came before humanity?

Find out in B. V. Larson’s Red Company: First Strike!, a pulse-pounding, high-stakes military sci-fi adventure.

A great new series

I've really enjoyed this book, I can see this making a great new series with lots of avenues to explore. B.V. Larson has always gripped me with their writing style and I've enjoyed many of their books, especially the Undying Mercenaries series.

My only minor (very minor) criticism is that all the character voices are exceptionally similar to those in the Undying Mercenaries series - which is likely to happen when the same voice artist is used. - To clarify, I do enjoy Mark Boyett's narration style. It's just when you're 19 books into the series and you start a new series with the same artist narrating it there are going to be similarities.

That said, it's not going to stop me getting the next book in the series when it's released on Audible.

excellent series.

I love B V Larsons books. all the characters are engaging and the narrator is brilliant. I will continue reading all his books as they are both entertaining and original.

Slow burn

Not the normal BV Larson. The main protagonist just seems to amble through the book. A big deal is made of him being a bit stronger than the others but ut goes nowhere. J had hopes when they mutated towards the end but nope nothing seems to have come from that either. maybe later in the series it will speed up??

good science fiction

some of the accents were a bit dodgy but the story itself was good. I'll be ordering book 2

the main character

unlike James Mcgill, this character seemed a bit more relatable to me personally, though I won't be fighting in space anytime soon.

Was disappointed

I had high hopes for this, the premise sounded good and BV Larson has loads of sci fi books on audible so I thought it would be good. But I found it light on detail and character development. I mean half a boarding action battle for our main character and his first battle was simply explained away, and all I got from it was that it went well and our hero did alright. Also the main character explained things that given his location at that time in the story and his new role he wouldn’t know anything about. When you’ve listened to some really quality stories like arisen, red rising or warship you really notice these things. Sorry but I returned it.
