Summary

England is overrun by dragons of all shapes and sizes. Most people are blissfully unaware of them and the Pendragon Treaty that keeps the peace between human and dragon kind. Only those born with preternatural hearing, like Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are able to hear and converse with dragonkind.

When the first firedrake egg laid in a century is stolen from Pemberley, the fragile dragon peace teeters on collapse. Darcy has no choice but to chase down the thief, a journey that leads him to quaint market town of Meryton and fellow Dragon Keeper, Elizabeth Bennet.

Elizabeth shares a unique bond with dragons, stronger than anything Darcy has ever experienced. More than that, her vast experience and knowledge of dragon lore may be the key to uncovering the lost egg. But Elizabeth can’t stand Darcy’s arrogance and doesn’t trust him to care properly for a precious baby firedrake. After all, he already lost the egg once. What’s to prevent it from happening again?

Can he win her trust and recover the stolen egg before it hatches and sends England spiraling back into the Dark Ages of Dragon War?

Jane Austen meets Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern. A must-listen for Pern fans.

Cute re-written book

This book has such an interesting little twist in the re-writing of the classic novel people have talked about for ages. The illustration of the book is so cute and should help you know about the dragons in the book (as well as the title). Although the title on audible and the one on goodreads are vastly different, they both look nice, I would have liked the one on goodreads better if you could see more of the dragon.

The narrator did such a great job. He does so many different pitches of voices for the different characters

The way this book ends is in a cliff-hangar style (although you know there was going to be more)

I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving am honest review.

What a wonderful dragonly rendition.

I totally loved this version of Pride and Prejudice. The injection of dragons into the tale proved very entertaining. While the author was able to maintain the personalities of the original cast of characters she did an awesome job at bringing the various dragons to life as well. The selection of the narrator can only be described as most fitting. He has a wonderful wealth of voices to add to the characters. Can't wait to listen to the next.

Fun, Light Listen

I enjoyed listening to this. It was just what I needed, a light-hearted retelling of the first part of P & P.

The story is woven round the original work very well.

The narrator is a touch too American for my taste. I'm English and I expect an British narrator for a story about English people in England. It's not too bad, I managed to ignore it mostly once I got used to it. Just sometimes there would be an odd word where the pronunciation would throw me out of the story.

I have bought the next book in the series, Its a great story to listen to while knitting. :)

good listen, both well narrated and interesting

great take on fantasy with a good plot, only slightly let down by an unsatisfying ending that i the writer intends to solve in future books.
the setting and ideas are well thought through and feel real enough for the story to not be too farfetched.

the narrator keeps a perfect pace throughout with no unnecessary pauses and great voices to separate characters without it being too overplayed except some kid voices at the very start of the book.

overall a great listen which leaves me looking forward to the next installment.

Brilliant, Absorbing and Fascinating

I was provided with a free copy of this audiobook in return for an honest review.

What a wonderful adaptation of the original Pride and Prejudice novel. This was a delight and joy to listen to. I have always loved fantasy novels and dragons are a big part of that love, so combining the wit and social commentary of Jane Austen with the temperamental agitation of having dragons in your life was a fantastic adventure for me.

Maria has managed to combine the two elements into a beautiful retelling of Elizabeth and Darcy, using their original characters to develop through the advent of being dragon keepers. Keeping the ideals of Austen clear in the story while incorporating a whole new world of dragons and dragon lore is not an easy thing to do, and I greatly admire the author for attempting this.

I have given five stars for everything because I cannot fault the writing, the performance or the adaptation. I am sure that some people will comment that Austen's work should not be meddled with, but I do not care. The results of this meddling are too delightful for me to fault in any way.

Benjamin Fife does a lovely job of giving each dragon its own voice, from squeaking and high pitched to full-throated roaring. He also develops a tone for both Elizabeth and Darcy that match their characters.

I will point out for those of you expecting it to complete the same way as Pride and Prejudice, it is the first of a series so do not expect Elizabeth and Darcy's story to come to its end in this installment.

I loved it!!!!!

I enjoyed listening to this book so much. At times I laughed so hard that I had to stop what I was doing until I stopped laughing, sometimes only to start again soon after gaining my composure.

This is the first Jane Austen type story that I've ever read or listened to. By type, I mean Jane Austen's own stories or variations of them. I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same.
What piqued my interest was the mention of dragons, something that has intrigued me for quite some time.

both the writer, Maria Grace, and the narrator, Benjamin Fife, did an excellent job with the story.

Thoroughly enjoyable and a brilliant idea

I loved this so much I'm not quite sure how to express it. I totally love the idea, the way it weaves through the original story with such a different spin on it! It is so enjoyable. Familiar characters with a different take. The story itself is great, and I felt myself sucked in to it so easily. I wasn't sure about Benjamin Fife to start with but as I settled into the story I appreciated his narration more and more. Now I need to know what happens next!

Enjoyed it!

*I was given a free copy of this book in audiobook version at my request in exchange for an honest review*
I know what are you thinking, Jane Austen and dragons??
But that was the exact reason why Requested the book...
What would happen if the main characters of Pride & Prejudice were members of some sort of secret society who takes care of dragons?
The similarities with the original novel are few and far between, and at certain point I didn't know if I was going to like it. But the story develops little by little and you grow fond of this characters, especially the dragons, and yes you want to know what happens next.
No cliffhanger which is always a bonus!

A great twist on a classic novel.

I really enjoy this. The voice is clear and not grating to listen to with emotion behind the words.

A very interesting twist on a beloved book

This book is a very interesting twist on a beloved book. I've read other books by Maria Grace and they're a solid three stars read for me at least because of the historical accuracy and the imagination. I was expecting this one to be just like the others but was surprised to find it even better.
I loved to see how the dragons influenced certain well-known scenes of the book.
It was such a shame that the narrator seemed to have stones in his mouth and his female voices were so annoying. It didn't stop me from listening 'til the end but that was for sure a negative point.
