Summary
Allison has a secret. Like any farm wife, she is prepared for bad storms, bad times, and bad luck. But even her husband is unaware she is more prepared than the average farm wife. (But don't ever call Allison a prepper!)
Riley and Will are motorcycle buddies on a mission to rescue Riley's nephew, who's been kidnapped by his father. When a solar flare throws them all together, there's going to be problems.

Enjoyable listen
This was a new author to me. The book was well written and the narration was well done.

Allison’s Secret Review
After a solar flare wipes out most of the worlds technology, Allison and her neighbours join together to try and make her town more self sufficient.
However there are people who are believe that they can just take what they want with no consequence. And after trying to help four strangers, all hell literally breaks loose.
There’s a bit of everything in this action paced book for everyone... there’s fun fights which in turn leads to a boy getting shot, bombs, and plenty of sass from Allison herself.

Surprisingly good story
This story primarily involves the story of a woman who was obsessed with being prepared for an emergency. What she did not realize was that the emergency was the end of life as she knew it. It describes what occurs when a solar flare reaches earth and knocks out the power grid for most of the Northern Hemisphere.
There are many obstacles and she has to assist organizing a community so that they can survive the Winter. In the midst of this is a group who are involved in the rescue of a young boy and their encounter with the boy's father and his friends who intend to kill the men and the boys mother.
All very exciting action and too real life in such a situation. The story was well written and involved for a story of this length with no wasted verbiage.
The narration was excellent. The use of multiple voices for individuals by the narrator lent realism to the story and kept it very interesting throughout.

OK but ...
It did keep me entertained most of the day but there was an awful lot of concern about toilet paper and huge rant about the lazy democrats! Alison’s world is black or white and had no connection to the rest of the world. The lack of knowledge about their own history and how people managed without electricity was astounding.

They will do whatever it takes.
After the effects of a Coronal Mass Ejection not the earth, panic descends on Rockford and Chicago, in part because of news bulletins warning of anticipated Muslim terrorist attacks. But it was everyday mean minded Americans who prove to be the actual terrorists. Alison, prepared, as she puts it to her sister, not a prepper (excuse me, perhaps it's just my British bias, but purchasing $100 of ammunition per month, plus other gun related devises, to feed into her armoury, sounds very much more like prepping to me), has amassed a large supply of survival goods, from food to guns to toilet paper, far exceeding the needs of her and her husband to see them through a week of bad weather, her reason for squirrelly it all away. Where did she get the money? And how could her husband not know? Bossy and self satisfied, she comes over more as one of those people just waiting for a disaster to take control, and the political rants against Democrats might well mirror some reader's views but to this one, felt bigoted and totally unnecessary, more like a Nazi agenda than that of a caring citizen. No, I did not like Alison and her small town cohorts.
In contrast, the two biker friends, Bill and Riley, also gun toting and not afraid to use them, came over as compassionate and capable, as they ride into the area to retrieve Riley's nephew for his sister from the violent father, George Wilson. Their story is engaging and a reason to continue reading.
Characterization is good, situations, though, felt contrived, although for wannabe peppers there is useful information. J.Scott Bennett's narration is, as usual, superb, with full textual understanding, good pacing and intonation as well as separate and appropriate voicing for each of the characters. A fine performance. He is a pleasure to hear even when what he reads becomes less than enjoyable.
Will I be reading the next in this series? Probably, as I formed a literary attachment to Bill and Riley. Would I recommend it to others? No.

great story
I would like a sequel to this, it feels unfinished for me, I'd like to know how they all get on long term. I do hope they had enough toilet rolls to last them.
an enjoyable story, that was easy to listen too.

An entertaining read
I really enjoyed this book, it was fast paced, action packed and full of interesting characters that just had me hooked from the start. I finished this in one sitting and was desperate to start book 2, definately a series worth following. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
