Summary

The epic novel of espionage, betrayal and turbulence in 1960s Hong Kong by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell

Taking place over the course of an eventful week in 1963 Hong Kong, James Clavell’s Noble House is a masterfully woven novel of true suspense.

Ian Dunross, the current tai-pan of the illustrious yet financially troubled Struan empire, is racing to undo the damage his predecessor left behind and to once again stand on stable ground. And he’ll do whatever it takes—including striking a hard-fought deal with an American millionaire. But his rival, Quillan Gornt, has other plans. Suddenly caught in a dubious plot involving Soviet spies, Hong Kong’s criminal underground, and the hostile takeover of his company, Dunross holds nothing back in the fight for the Noble House.

Espionage, mayhem, and high-stakes betrayals make Noble House Clavell’s most prolific and imaginatively crafted narrative in the Asian Saga.

Really great yarn, dreadful narration.

I love James Clavell novels - they are all great stories with excellent pilots and character development. I also like getting a sense of what life was like in these historical situations. Hong Kong is so much in ours minds now.

What a shame that Ralph Lister makes such heavy weather of Noble House. I very nearly gave up after the first couple of hours as the narration was really getting on my nerves. It would be worth getting this rerecorded to avoid putting listeners off the whole series.

An epic tale woven into the fabric of Hong Kong and China. Fantastic performance by the narrator makes this memorable

Addictive!

Would you consider the audio edition of Noble House to be better than the print version?

This is a great book and the author does a great job mixing up the voices, some are pretty funny but overall very good.

What about Ralph Lister’s performance did you like?

Great job of different characters to avoid boredom.

Any additional comments?

Well worth it.

Hard to put down!

I listened to this under my motorbike helmet on the way to work, during work and again on the way home!
I have read Shogun and Tai Pan in hard copy and because I enjoyed this so much I am going to buy King Rat on Audible as well .

Narrator is a bit poo story is brilliant.

Story rises far above Ralph Listers' shouty narration. Every character is indeed a character and the setting and intrigue will suck you in. Intensely engaging.

An epic story, read by my favourite narrator

I thought the beginning was a little slow, but it picks up significantly. As with previous James Clavell books, it takes a while to really get to know all the characters. The story runs deep, the characters are lively, and theltural references give an amazing insight into the place.

Great plot but very drawn out

Enjoyed the book overall but found narrator too aggressive in tone - it’s almost like he was very angry all the time and this came out in his narration

Many characters, many plots, disaster and triumph,

Fantastic listen, you'll fall in love with some and detest others, you'll believe the truth only to be proved wrong. The journey sucks you into the vortex of easy money and unlimited power. Choosing not to read this book will be a regret you'll never know!

Outstanding

I loved the way that each character had a distinct voice that clearly portrayed the influence of being Asian, English, European or from the States. A must for anyone who has read the book as Hong Kong comes to life.
