Galaxy 'Alex' Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale's freshman class. A dropout and the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved crime, Alex was hoping for a fresh start. But a free ride to one of the world's most prestigious universities was bound to come with a catch.

Alex has been tasked with monitoring the mysterious activities of Yale's secret societies - well-known haunts of the rich and powerful. Now there's a dead girl on campus and Alex seems to be the only person who won't accept the neat answer the police and campus administration have come up with for her murder.

Because Alex knows the secret societies are far more sinister and extraordinary than anyone ever imagined. They tamper with forbidden magic. They raise the dead. And sometimes they prey on the living . . .

Completely absorbing book

Loved the story. It's a really clever mixture of reality and make belive which creates a really compelling story. The characters are strong and the story goes at a decent pace so I was always dying to get back on and hear the next part. The only slight niggle is the narration is very earnest, so some of the funnier lines lost a bit of their impact. Looking forward to the sequel though.

Good but gory!

An absorbing story, but darker, more brutal, than I expected! Heading back to Bardugo's YA books for a while...

engrossing and diverting

loved the character of Alex Stern because she is not good and she's not bad, but trying to figure out how to live in the world as it exists.

this adds some believable ballast to a book that is otherwise pure escapism, The Secret History but with magic. Bardugo got the balance exactly right.

loved the narration, though I know that's a very personal thing. finished the book in one gulp and immediately bought the sequel.

Dark and gripping

This was excellently read and I was really drawn in, with a few very haunting moments too.

Yale, students, magic, ghosts, meh...

Like many other reviewers, I found this book to be rather 'young adult'. I've read so many fantasies set in magic schools that I'm sick to death of it, and magical college isn't much better. I found the characters irritating and somehow the character of Alex just didn't seem worldly-wise enough to have had the past that's ascribed to her. Also, there are few things more irritatingly American than American college students, in nearly all literature they seem so naive and childish compared to European students. However, it wasn't so bad that I returned it - I listened to the whole book. I had previously listened to Shadow and Bone, which is one of Leigh Bardugo's young readers' titles, and I didn't enjoy that much either, so I suppose I just don't like her style.

A tale of magic, ghosts and crime

Seriously, what more could you want. An excellent book, told from the point of view of an underdog heroine who can see ghosts. Absolutely kept me on the edge of my seat, I was listening at every opportunity! A thrilling listen with lots of twists and turns.

Brilliant!

I was so ready to read a story that is meant for older adult audiences and I was so glad when the Ninth House came out. It’s not that the main characters are old here, not at all but the journey they have been on and go on this book makes them somehow more believable and relatable that the Grishaverse characters. And then the story itself - a fantastic mix between dark academia and interesting twist on magic and secret societies. Leigh’s writing is delicious and while the book started a little slowly for me, the more I listened the better it got. Mystery, magic, great world building and brilliant writing. Lauren’s narration is stunning as usual and brings the story to life wonderfully. Cant wait for the next book.

What a book!

This is one of the best books I have ever read! It’s full of magic, the characters are extremely well developed and edgy, the story has so many twists and turns that you’re always wondering what is around the corner. And the narrator is brilliant! I had such a great time that I cannot wait to listen to the 2nd instalment! Absolutely wonderful ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
