Summary

Amateur sleuth Mordecai Tremaine is back in another classic mystery from the author of Murder for Christmas.

When Mordecai Tremaine emerges from the train station, murder is the last thing on his mind. But then again, he has never been able to resist anything in the nature of a mystery - and a mystery is precisely what awaits him in the village of Dalmering.

Rehearsals for the local amateur dramatic production are in full swing - but as Mordecai discovers all too soon, the real tragedy is unfolding offstage. The star of the show has been found dead, and the spotlight is soon on Mordecai, whose reputation in the field of crime-solving precedes him.

With a murderer waiting in the wings, it's up to Mordecai to derail the killer's performance...before it's curtains for another victim.

It didn’t work for me.

Having just listened to a great book read amazingly. Any follow up was going to be challenge. It was read nicely -well enunciated and nice tone but somehow the emphasis didn’t work for me so it found hard to follow. The plot takes a while to get going but afraid I couldn’t stick with it as just washed over me.

Loved it

I really enjoyed this book. I have also been listening to The Sherlock Holmes books and find them a bit hard going but this book is delightful!! Lots of suspects, twists and turns. I actually guessed the perpetrator quite early on but didn't have a clue why!! Very enjoyable

Excellent story

This has all the markings of a good old fashioned who done it. Enjoy Geoffrey Beevers narration as it blends lovely with the story. Plenty of twisty turns and blind allys.

Heading says it's optional but isn't.

Great old fashioned murder mystery very well performed by the narrator. Highly recommended, particularly to fans of classic crime.

Nice relaxing experience

Brilliant narration. As an avid reader of mystery thrillers, denouement anticipated otherwise most enjoyable

generally okay

The end is a good surprise but the plot build up is a bit laboured and some time unnecessary emphasis on what someone is trying to do when they are saying something. so overall not great but not terrible either.

An old fashioned mystery!

I purchased this as it sounded intriguing and seemed to be along the lines of an Agatha Christie mystery. It is a sort of discount Poirot!!

I listened in the car and have to say that the first few chapters didn't keep my attention as I often found my mind wondering. I also couldn't easily engage with any of the characters, and I only really got interested towards the end and the big reveal!

The narration by Geoffrey Beevers was ok and complimented the characters and era in which the story was set well.

If you like Agatha Christie and have exhausted all of her novels give this a go, as despite my initial reservations I will probably try some of the other Francis Duncan books.
