Summary
James Bennett, nephew of Sir Henry Merrivale (the cantankerous yet genius sleuth), has been invited to stay at White Priory for Christmas, among the retinue of the glamorous Hollywood actress Marcia Tait. Her producer, her lover, her playwright and her agent are all here along with the haughty master of the estate, Canifes and his daughter.
So many suspects they become when Marcia Tait is found dead on Christmas morning in the lakeside pavilion, having been left there alone the night before and with a distinct lack of footprints in the snow to reveal any possible killer. When Henry Merrivale arrives to piece together what appears to be an impossible crime, John Dickson Carr, writing under the pseudonym Carter Dickson, treats the listener to sensational twists, febrile tension between the closed circle of suspects and one of the most perfect solutions in the history of the genre.

Ingenious tangle.
a puckish sleuth, a movie doxy egging on a band of potential murderers, all within a mansion replete with pitfalls. Narrated with charm, humour and skill, i wish more of Merrivale's jaunty and macabre outings were available on audible.

An enjoyable puzzle with superb narration
This is one of the classics of detective fiction, with a very carefully planned out plot full of twists and turns. However the author plays fair: the information is given to the reader, and through the analysis of the detective you (and the other characters) suddenly see facts which you had been told about, but had failed to notice. Fun stuff,
But the real brilliance of this audiobook is in the narration. John Telfer is magnificent. He gives each character his or her own voice, but in particular he succeeds brilliantly in painting a larger-than-life but still somehow believable character in his great detective. The mannerisms inherited from the Victorians are there, and are convincingly rendered without ever descending into caricature.
This is one I shall certainly listen to again.

Great deduction
All the clues were there and were obvious in the conclusion as Sir Henry Merrivale brings the case to a conclusion. I look forward to reading more of these novels,

Not as good as expected
I’m afraid golden age murder mysteries are very much hit or miss for me. This was a miss with stereotypes of local plod amongst others. I like a bit of country house atmosphere, with guest meeting for cocktails in the drawing room, breakfast etc before the murder but this was straight in and from then on interviews and conjectures. I think I may have enjoyed reading instead of listening? I just listened to Heads you Lose by Christianna Brand and it was everything I wanted in a winter mystery.

Dreary in the extreme
So boring I couldn't listen any more. I like this period of detective fiction but couldn't stay awake for this one.
