About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before

'What's so hard about pulling a sword out of a stone? The real work's already been done. You ought to make yourself useful and find the man who put the sword in the stone in the first place.'

The City Watch needs MEN! But what it's got includes Corporal Carrot (technically a dwarf), Lance-constable Cuddy (really a dwarf), Lance-constable Detritus (a troll), Lance-constable Angua (a woman... most of the time) and Corporal Nobbs (disqualified from the human race for shoving).

And they need all the help they can get, because someone in Ankh-Morpork has been getting dangerous ideas - about crowns and legendary swords, and destiny.

And the problem with destiny is, of course, that she is not always careful where she points her finger. One minute you might be minding your own business on a normal if not spectacular career path, the next you might be in the frame for the big job, like saving the world . . .

The Discworld novels can be listened to in any order but Men At Arms is the second book in the City Watch series.

Absolutely brilliant

Couldn’t dislike a thing. Totally transported by Culshaw’s narration. Every character in my mind realistic and true to Pratchetts vision I’m sure. Long time Discworld reader. I’m going to continue through all of Pratchett’s books again, solely on the amazing narration and the bringing of the characters to life.

Jon Culshaw’s gorgeous voice.

Highlight: Jon Calshaw’s “Bloody Stupid Johnson” voice

The only thing I’d change is the noise before the footnotes. It’s intrusive and unnecessary.

Great author, great story, great narrator

Having read my way through the trials and tribulations, and been accompanied by Tony Robinson reading them on many a long journey, I was a little hesitant on downloading this. But it is brilliant - a little like casting the drama from the best British actors of the last 50 years, as Jon Culshaw is a superb mimic. Nobby is definitely Steptoe, whilst Carrot has more than a touch of Pike about him. Listen and make your own mind up. Onto 'Feet of Clay'!

A great new voice for a classic series

Pratchett had such a wry view of the world, highlighting all our foibles through the Discworld

Best so Far

Culshaw is terrific with accents - he gets the main cast spot on - but his overall narration is painfully slow, misses the charm of Pratchett’s writing and Cruses in this one is unbearable to listen to. I itch to take the audio file and remove a lot of the lengthy pauses so the whole thing can flow better. Directorial influence could have made this really excellent. Notably the new versions are longer than the old unabridged versions, and that’s down to slow delivery.

Fantastic Pratchett as always.

Struggling with the new narration

With such good source material, you need a cast that are up to the challenge and this is a great example of that!

Such a great listen!

Another great audio version of one of my favourite Pratchett books. Jon Culshaw is a great pick as reader.

Great early Pratchett

Culshaw narrates one of my favourite Discworld books. STP starts to develop the characters of the City Watch beautifully in this book and Culshaw brings them to life

Great - just great
