Summary

Katherine Switzer ran the Boston Marathon in 1967, where she was attacked by one of the event's directors who wanted to eject her from the all-male race. She fought off the director and finished the race. From the childhood events that inspired her to winning the New York City Marathon in 1974, this book details the struggles and achievements of a pioneering woman in sports.

Critic reviews

"A thoughtfully written memoir...[Switzer is] still running strong; she's headed back to Boston this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her 1967 pioneering run, making this a perfect time to brush up on running history." (Mother Runner)

"Kathrine Switzer is the Susan B. Anthony of women's marathoning." (Joan Benoit Samuelson, first Olympic Gold Medalist in the women's marathon)

Absolutely inspiring

An absolute must for anyone into or thinking about running, and a good reminder of how far we have come, and also, how far we need to go

Social History Through Running.

An absolutely fantastic listen that has kept me well distracted but motivated on long runs. The mix of personal experience and wider history of the rise of women's running was captivating.

Fascinating and I’m thankful

This book is amazing. The journey Katherine went through and what she has done for women’s running. I am ever thankful.
I enjoy running. I’ve run the London Marathon and at the time didn’t even think about what it took to make that possible for me.

Inspirational and brilliant x
