Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘Bella’s brilliant love letter to running turns into an extraordinarily brave and frank account of her battle with anxiety. A compassionate and important book’ Joe Lycett

‘Perfect for resetting a glum January mindset’ Alexandra Heminsley

‘My kind of role model’ Ben Fogle

Divorced and struggling with deep-rooted mental health problems, Bella Mackie ended her twenties in tears. She could barely find the strength to get off the sofa, let alone piece her life back together. Until one day she did something she had never done of her own free will – she pulled on a pair of trainers and went for a run.

That first attempt didn’t last very long. But to her surprise, she was back out there the next day. And the day after that. She began to set herself achievable goals – to run 5k in under 30 minutes, to walk to work every day for a week, to attempt 10 push-ups in a row. Before she knew it, her mood was lifting for the first time in years.

In Jog On, Bella explains with hilarious and unfiltered honesty how she used running to battle crippling anxiety and depression, without having to sacrifice her main loves: booze, cigarettes and ice cream. With the help of a supporting cast of doctors, psychologists, sportspeople and friends, she shares a wealth of inspirational stories, research and tips that show how exercise often can be the best medicine. This funny, moving and motivational book will encourage you to say ‘jog on’ to your problems and get your life back on track – no matter how small those first steps may be.

Fell in love with this book, and with Bella Mackie

Loved this book. Found it honest, insightful, and ultimately really inspiring. I fell in love with Bella Mackie. Her gorgeous voice taking you through such a raw exposure of heartbreak, and how she slowly built herself back. I am a runner, and a massive softie, so am.massivrly biased, but read it. I bet you love it too!

Just brilliant.

This book, for me, gives an insight into anxiety that is true and honest. Bella Mackie has described elements of anxiety that are not often spoken about or understood. I instantly connected with this book and loved that there is a balance between her experience, others experience, notes from other books, and research. It is wonderfully written and in the case of the audio book wonderfully read. Iwas so glad it was Bella Mackie reading it I find it makes a huge difference to the listening experience. This book is inspirational and gives hope. Hope that anxiety does not have to control your life.

Just what I needed!

This book was a lot more than I was expecting, but in a good way! So relatable for someone who also suffers with anxiety. And her voice is lovely to listen to!

Interesting, inspiring and insightful book

I enjoyed this book more and more as I progressed through it. I did jump around a few chapters, it worked for me. The author’s dry wit comes through in her narration, as does her passion for the subject and compassion for others (and eventually herself). A good listen if you know someone who struggles with anxiety or other mental health conditions, and for encouragement to start something difficult and stick with it. And if if you like autobiographies.

Moving, tough and inspiring listen

This wasn't quite the book I thought it was going to be, but I absolutely loved it!! It was a lot more personal, intense and frankly harrowing at times, than I thought it would be. It covered the real and brutal truths of depression and anxiety, experienced by the author and others she researched. The running is a part of the book, but for me it is much more a book about mental health and running is just how Bella manages it. I am at the beginning of my running experience and also a woman who has suffered with depression and mild anxiety, therefore this was so much more inspirational and personal than I thought it would be.
Bella is not a natural audiobook narrator, but hearing her story in her own voice works really well.
I recommend this book, you could even listen while you jog.... like I have been!

Great insight into mental health and jogging

This is one of the best books I have listened to. The writer gave great insight into mental health and how running has helped her in her day to day. I found this book to be honest and insightful and it definitely helped me feel better about my running experience. I strongly recommend if you are thinking of trying running to help with state of mind.
