Good story

Predictable but the twist in the end was worth the wait. I miss Joseph O'Loughlin series.

Excellent listen, lots of twists and turns

I'm a big fan of Michael Robotham and was so glad when I saw that two more of his books were available on Audible. This series is set in Nottingham UK, though we don't get that much of a sense of the city itself.

The story is mostly told from the point of view of an early career psychologist, who is working part time for the police. I really enjoy the psychological angle in crime thrillers, it makes for an in depth story with some fascinating insights. He isn't exposed so much to the animosity and degrading treatment that criminal proflers seem to have suffered from various police force characters in earlier times, as depicted by other authors, which was getting a bit tiresome and old for me and started me wondering why people would continue to work in conditions where they were exposed to so much animosity in their workplace from their colleagues!

The second main protagonist is a young woman, who we first meet when she is in a secure children's home. Both main characters are likeable. We don't have in this story so much the point of view of the perpetrator/s, which makes it a lighter read/ listen than for instance some thrillers by Val McDermid or even some of the earlier thrillers by Michael Robotham in the Joe O'Loughlin series. The crimes are still really harrowing and awful though, but I guess it wouldn't be a crime thriller if it didn't have that in it!

I really like the voice of the new narrator, of course Sean Barrett was unrivalled in the Joe O'Laughlin series, but I think that the voice of Joe Jameson really works well for this new set of characters.

The lead detective comes across as a bit dry and brusque, at times I was thinking she should show a bit more compassion towards the families of victims. But it could just be professionalism I suppose. There is a bit of police procedural content as they work on the case of a missing figure skater, however that is not the main angle.

A note that while this is a stand alone book, but I wouldn't say that book 2 in this series, When She Was Good, is stand alone.

Compelling read

Don't read that many thrillers and this author was new to me. But this was a compelling plot with credible characters. Flagged a bit at times, but interest always maintained by the expert narrator and his many voices.

Interesting premis

I enjoyed the idea of the “truth wizard”. The story got off to a slow start but I persevered and was not disappointed

Addictive listening.

i was looking for the narrator Joe Jameson as I love his work on The Undead and I must say that this book is brilliant. Totally hooked from the first few minutes.
Would certainly recommend.
